Venezuela could get 3 Russian submarines

CARACAS - Latin Briefs

Venezuela is reportedly planning to buy three Russian submarines to modernize its navy's fleet in the latest potential military deal between the two countries.

Venezuela is set to purchase three Amur-class submarines to replace its German Type 209 submarines, the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti reported Sunday.

The diesel-electric submarines are equipped with an anti-ship weapon system that enables the vessels to fire Club-S missiles and torpedoes from 10 torpedo tubes in the bow, RIA-Novosti said.

Venezuela's state-run Bolivarian News Agency reported last week that the navy was also seeking bids from the governments of South Korea, China and France.

Vice Adm. José Laguna, the navy's commander in chief, said the purchases would begin in 2007, according to the ABN agency, as it is known by its Spanish initials.

Venezuela bought 10 attack helicopters from Russia in March and agreed in June to purchase another five.

Venezuela has also agreed to purchase 100,000 AK-103 Russian-built assault rifles.

Hugo Chavez - Venezuela

***...Chávez was the only foreign leader to visit Saddam Hussein after the first Gulf war. During his visit he embraced Saddam and called him "brother." ...*** Hurricane Hugo

***............Jawahar said Chavez also is trying to build regional support for his friend and ally, Cuban President Fidel Castro. .....At a signing ceremony for the oil deals in Jamaica on Tuesday, Chavez urged Caribbean governments to consider Cuba-style socialism as an alternative to capitalism. "Fidel, I think you were always right: It's socialism or death," he said. Source

LOL! If Chavez had played his cards right...He could have had a few pre-owned almost like new American subs. What an idiot.

They'll look lovely in permanent dry-dock. Of course, they can have "accidents" even in port.

They were going to buy the subs from Mexico, until they found out that adobe melts when it gets wet.

Chavez is sucking up to every anti-Ameican leader he can. He's working to become a power player and godfather of Latin America, and Venezuela's located where it and Cuba can be a thorn in our side.

The red-triangle in South America will be a decahedron before our people wake up and realize what's happening. Heck, they won't even defend our own borders. I fear for our children. Seriously.

If there are enough "hot spots" we can be spread too thin.

Along with the Russian subs, Su-27's & MiG-29s, maybe Hugo will request nuclear tipped missiles from his new best friend, KGB-Putin.

After all Hugo's other pals, Tehran's Mullahs, have the Russians working overtime so the 7th century madmen can push all the wrong buttons, why not Hugo too?

Chavez says oil would hit $100 if U.S. attacks

"Venezuela bought 10 attack helicopters from Russia in March and agreed in June to purchase another five."

Russia to present 100 models of naval engineering and weapons at Venezuela exhibition

45 Venezuelan arms experts will undergo training in Russia on the production of the assault rifles.

"Venezuela has also agreed to purchase 100,000 AK-103 Russian-built assault rifles."

(U.S. intelligence says it might reach 300,000)

In addition to Hugo's communist paradise, Moscow is diligently working on outfitting Iran's mullahs with enough nukes to carry out a number of unthinkable. Let's not forget Putin assisting terrorist promoting Syria with various forms of arms.

They say the Cold War is over. It's looks like Putin & his pals may want to instigate a hot war.

'Chavez tries to use these new toys against the wrong nation, he's going to lose them.

He has money (oil) enough to do whatever he wants to militarily but he's going to have to neglect his constituents in doing so. Right now he's planning on carrying Venezuelan socialism and Cuban communism both on Venezuelan oil barrells, all the while trying to foment hate and discontent in the rest of South America.

He's up to trouble but is going to end up dead sooner than he thinks and it will probably happen at the hands of his own people.

Is Iran helping Venezuela going nuclear? ***.........To the minute number of people who understand the threat Chavez poses to the United States, his recent hosting in Caracas of Iranian President Mohammad Khatami was disturbing enough. But a high-ranking official for a Latin American government has disclosed to me details about that visit that should send shock waves throughout our government.

During a private meeting between Chavez and Khatami, I was told, Chavez made it known to the Iranian leader that he would like to "introduce nuclear elements into Venezuela." My contact said "nuclear elements" meant "nuclear weapons."

It will be easy for many to dismiss such talk as false or the fantasies of a madman, but that would be a critical mistake. I have no doubt that Chavez is mentally disturbed, and I also have no doubt that his hatred of the United States and President Bush in particular is dictating his erratic behavior. High oil prices have made Chavez an antagonist to be reckoned with, and we ignore such a menace at our peril......***

That doesn't seem to have bothered his mentor, Fidel Castro the last 50 years.

Considering the dismal safety record of Russian submarines I am not too concerned about the Venezuela getting subs.

Russia had trouble keeping new subs afloat and these old tubs have been rusting away in moth balls since 1989.

What will Chavez do with them? Strictly PR dressing for national image purposes. For the sake of the safety of his crews Chavez should keep these subs tied up alongside his luxurious yacht.

***....HURRICANE HUGO [John J. Miller] Our man in Venezuela, on a roll in an extended interview with the Wash Post: "This U.S. administration -- the current government -- is a terrorist administration, not all U.S. governments. I entertained the best of relations with the Clinton administration, and I consider myself a good friend of former President Carter.

... This administration invaded Iraq. According to Pope John Paul II, it is an illegal war, an immoral war, a terrorist war. The U.S. has bombarded entire cities, used chemical weapons and napalm, killed women, children and thousands of soldiers. That's terrorism.

... This [present U.S.] government is a threat to humanity. I have confidence that the American people will save humanity from this government -- they will not allow it to [continue to] violate human rights and to invade countries. ...

Regarding who is in the White House, it's up to you, the American people. Think it over. A government with so much power that it can start a war and destabilize a country but doesn't take care of its own people. Now, before the hurricane, they knew that Katrina was coming, and the government did not evacuate people. In Cuba, when they know a hurricane is coming, chickens, hens and people are all evacuated." ....***National Review Corner

The movie "Red Dawn" had Communist takeovers in Mexico and South America being followed by an attack on the US with invasion from the south. Right now, it doesn't seem too far-fetched

I could see thousands of agitators/SF coming north, getting tight with the Hispanic street gangs, and that being used to blackmail a future Dem president with the promise of riots in the streets if he opposes Communist initiatives

And some people think here that we don't need submarines anymore.
