Special report: Next month’s UN report will drag British-based miner Xstrata into the controversy over surcharges paid to Saddam....

Glencore is also known as the company founded by Marc Rich, the commodities trader who fled to Switzerland from the US after being charged for embargo-busting in Iran following the Khomeini revolution. Four years ago, Rich was pardoned by President Bill Clinton on Clinton’s last day in the White House.

The Murrah building in Oklahoma City blew up on April 9, 1995; Iraqi ties to the bombing were subsequently covered up. Five days later, April 14 1995, Oil for Food was signed at the UN.

I have never for once believed that the Clintons could have managed to keep their hands out of the cookie jar that Oil for Food soon became.

Here we have evidence of the quid-pro-quo, a donation of I believe some $400,000 to the Clinton Library fund, in exchange for helping obscure what Rich was doing with Oil-for-Food, and the subsequent pardon.

We can also see her the possibility of further, less public "donations" to the Clintons through the Marc Rich company GLENCORE.

But mysteriously, Bill Clinton pardoned Marc Rich in the dying days of his presidency. A congressional committee that investigated the pardon was scathing.

EXTRACT FROM CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE REPORT: Despite clear legal restrictions on such trade, Rich engaged in commodities trading with Iraq, Iran, Cuba and other rogue states that have sponsored terrorists acts.

He had a long and disgraceful record of trading with America's enemies, helping prop up the Ayatollah Khomeini, Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi, and the Russian Mafia.

STEPHEN LONG: According to the report, Mr Rich was pardoned even though a Justice Department check revealed new evidence that he was wanted for arms trading.

Bill Clinton's pardon for Marc Rich followed representations by Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Barak, there are claims that Marc Rich was a Mossad spy. ref

Quoting from the article:

"As Saddam’s regime offered discounts from the official price to the 600 companies authorised to buy its crude, it separately collected surcharges of up to 50 cents a barrel on shipments."

"The Volcker committee found that in the course of $64 billion in Iraqi oil-for-food sales “nearly one-third of the surcharge payments were made by cash delivery to various Iraqi embassies abroad”. "

We would it not be suprising that marc rich is involved? Isn't Rich the single largest indicted thief in the history of our country. Clinton never did explain why pardoning the biggest crook ever is a great thing for the country.

I totally agree. But watch, there won't be another word about this anywhere, or if there is, there will be another round of quiet suicides here and there.

Wonder why George does't re-instate federal charges against Rich and include Clintoon as a co-cospirator??

Because a sitting President can't go after a former President, even if warranted without putting at risk any future Presidents from our political party.

Imagine the kind of political retribution that can be had with trumped up charges when a Democrat President takes charger after GWB's term is up? Especially if the Democrat has a political bone to pick and believes that going after GWB would fire up his/her base.

While expecting the Democrats to play by these same rules is risky, it keeps a lid on most of the partisanship.

The Clintons and modern Democrats do worry me that they're willing to set aside traditions in order to make a power grab using trumped up charges, and demagoguery... like many other tyrannies have done.

It is no wonder the liberals are afraid of the military, because there's a fair chance the country would be thrown into civil war with the military siding with the conservative states against the liberal government in the event that they do try to grab power. And the funny thing is, if the liberals do try to grab power in this manner, they're going to think the entire country is going to applaud them.

But you can see how a President going after a former President could unbalance our politics and set the precedence necessary for an unethical party to use a warranted indictment and conviction of a former President as the basis for trumped up charges against another, should they ever gain power?
