RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina has the highest gas price in the continental United States.
Triple-A says the average price per gallon here is three-dollars-seven cents. The state is topped only by the District of Columbia and Hawaii, where a gallon of gas averages three-14 and three-24, respectively.
Triple-A says regular unleaded in Asheville is the highest in the state at three-19 a gallon.
A key reason for that dubious title here is North Carolina's gas tax. The 27 cents paid on each gallon is the highest among Southern states and fifth-highest nationally. By comparison, Virginia's gas tax is 17 cents per gallon and South Carolina's is 16 cents.
The North Carolina Petroleum Marketers Association wants a cap on the tax for about a year so wholesale prices can get under control.
Governor Mike Easley says that would be too costly.

And we have state income tax. And car tax every year. A very highly taxed state for not much in return, IMO.

I was a nickel a pack until a month ago then they bumped it to .30 per pack. Not sure if it's taken effect yet or not.

I have spent a lot of time in N.C., they really do have high gas prices.
I think I read somewhere years ago that South Carolina had the lowest gas tax. Interestingly, they have good roads.

Always top off the tank in MA, VA, NJ, and SC when traveling back and forth to the South to avoid the taxes of NC, NY and CT.

There is NO correlation between high taxes/tolls and good roads. Travel through Illinois/Chicago and you'll see exactly what I mean.

The state is topped only by the District of Columbia...Sorry to quibble with WPTF, but isn't the District of Columbia in the continental US?

I always wondered why NC had such high taxes.
And in comparison to other southern states they've been higher long before the carpet baggers started to arrive in force.

Triple-A says the average price per gallon here is three-dollars-seven cents. Ranges from $2.99 to $3.19 a gallon around my neighborhood today (Atlanta 'burbs). Most seen price - $3.09.

Must be because they aren't officially "a state".
