Sorry, dog, but that is 100% BULLSHIT. Samuel Alito is one candidate who would have SAILED through that Committee and through the Senate. Arlen Specter loves him, and I know this for a FACT from someone who worked for Specter and talked to him right before Miers was nominated. Specter is the only RINO on that Committee, and the other RINOs defer to him. But Bush wanted a woman and he wanted to spite conservatives for torpedoing his real choice, Al Gonzales. Miers probably was the most palatable FEMALE choice to Specter, although I think Lindsey Graham was ready to go to the mat to get him to support Karen Williams. I was also told by a Washington "insider" that Miers impressed the Committee during the Roberts nomination, and even impressed Roberts himself, which may have been the final thing that led President Bush to think she was the best choice. But he was still wrong.

And if you think the Democrats are not lying in wait ready to pounce with some questions for Miers on obscure Supreme Court cases and constitutional theories, and will make her look look an idiot, I have a bridge to sell you.

I understand why you feel that way, and I did too until last night. I dont care who believes me, but this is one of those times when I have to eat my own words. This is sausage-making, pure and simple. Ugly as sin, but the best we could do.

I disagree.
President Bush has always made good choices.
He acts on reason and practicality rather than emotion.
He made a campaign promise to us about SCOTUS twice, and he was not going to go back on it.

DRL-She will handle the "obscure Supreme Court decisions" trap questions with grace. If she doesn't know, my bet, she will say so.

But don't be surprised if she throws a few clarification questions of her own that befuddle the questioner of said 'trap', she is nobody's fool, if her resume reads correctly.

PD-Nice essay and I am glad you ran into your 'friends' in the know.

However, now I am almost scared of our republican senators...surely they cannot be as weak as you proclaim...my goodness...can it be that all of them put their well paid jobs above doing what is best for our country? Scary, that.
