KCTC 1320 AM, is dropping its big-band and crooner format sometime before Nov. 1 to become Sacramento's Air America talk-radio affiliate. ...
"They're turning our music off!" groused Bob Hill, 79.
"It's the only music you can understand the words to," added 70-year-old Clyde Cassady.
"The musicians they play, like Glenn Miller, are dead now," said Evan Temple, also 70. "I guess they think we're dead, too."
Don't even get these guys started on Air America and liberal talk radio. They have enough complaints about losing their only non-subscription radio conduit for the dulcet tones of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and the Andrews Sisters.
"It's a shame," said Butch Lindzi, taking a long pull from his mug.
It's also a fact of life in radio these days - one being seen in major markets all over the country. Both the "adult standards" and formats featuring the "oldies" from the 1950s and early '60s are increasingly being dropped. In turn, they are being replaced by seemingly less moldy oldies from the '70s and '80s, or talk programming.
..."Advertisers think that our listenership is too old to be active consumers," Geary said. "We've watched our nostalgia audience at KCTC get smaller and older over the past decade and, at some stage, you reach the point of diminishing returns.
"God love them, they are loyal. But it's not working anymore."

big band listeners dying off
So they switch to Frankenstyle liberal talk radio?
Way to tap into a vibrant and growing demographic.
So "Air America" gets this station out of "diminishing returns?" bwahahahahahaha. That is too funny!
Well that's just sad...
Here's hoping that the phonograph or record player still works..
Or, that they have upgraded and can get a Time Life collection .
I hadn't heard the news. Last I knew Glenn Miller was still wowing them in the Catskills.
But seriously, if a radio station worries about declining audience, and switches from Big Band to Air America, they just have a death wish. Pure and simple.
I'm still in my 40's and I listen to big band radio. I was raised on my Dad's 78 collection.
My younger son, 17, and a musician, went to NY last year to see Les Paul at the Iridium. He'll take Les Paul over Eric Clapton anytime.
Let's see where else BIG BAND RADIO might be found:

Frying_pan --> Fire
I listened to Air America for a while when it came to a station near me. Dead would be an improvement for the knuckleheads that pass for "talent" in that outfit. I decided that the most succinct description of Air America is, "Radio by and for stupid children."
That could be the ONLY reason, because I'll bet their SOLID audience of 6 or 8 people are probably TOO stupid to ever find them again!
Would that the same could be saidof AirAmerica listeners.
Seriously, W-CBS FM dropped its Oldies format because us 50 somethings didn't fit the demographics they wanted.
Ahhh, but this is 'capitalism', isn't it? Chase the buck no matter how low the stoop? Or is it commercialism? Who are the radio station's customers, the seniors complaining or the station's, archly said, sponsors. Who pays and who is to be satisfied - not the people.
There is no commercial enterprise that must pander to the dumb masses that is enlightening or uplifting. That includes politicians - democracy is the rule of fools by fools.
That is an insult to stupid children everywhere.
AA is already on in Sac? Are they after the overflow?
I still have big band 45s and mono albums I bought in the 50s with my allowance...
1530 in Cincinnati did the same a while back. I understand that they're just behind interstation noise in the ratings books.
Ha! I have a feeling that the station's old listeners will be around long after Air America bites the dust. I listened to it here briefly once, and political differences aside, it was just terrible. The hosts were idiots and it was just plain bad radio. I mean really, really bad.
This story writes its own jokes...
If they think advertisers aren't interested in the old music format, wait until they get a load of the lack of interest in Air America.
