CA: Feinstein to oppose Schwarzenegger's special election initiatives

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Dianne Feinstein will participate in the campaign against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's agenda in the Nov. 8 special election, as well as an initiative seeking to impose restrictions on minors seeking abortions.

"Feinstein believes that the special election is a mistake. It's a costly waste of taxpayer dollars," spokesman Howard Gantman said Friday.

Feinstein, a San Francisco Democrat who also appeals to many independents and Republicans, plans to participate in opponents' efforts to explain why voters should defeat the initiatives, Gantman said. Such efforts could involve a direct mail campaign.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican, called the special election to further his "year of reform" agenda, which includes: Proposition 74, which would extend the probationary period of public school teachers from two years to five; Proposition 75, which would prohibit unions from using dues for political purposes without members' written consent; Proposition 76, which would limit state spending and give the governor more authority to make midyear budget cuts; and Proposition 77, which would give the job of drawing legislative district lines to retired judges instead of lawmakers.

Schwarzenegger also endorses Proposition 73, which would require parents or guardians to be notified when a minor seeks an abortion.

The special election ballot also contains three other initiatives.

Feinstein supports Proposition 80, to reregulate the state's energy market, and Proposition 79, a prescription drug initiative sponsored by labor unions and consumer groups. She opposes Proposition 78, a rival prescription drug initiative sponsored by the drug industry, Gantman said.

Feinstein to oppose Schwarzenegger's special election initiatives

In related news, the sun will rise, grass will grow, paint will dry and water is still wet.

Of course she'll oppose the initiatives, we can't actually let the people decide on the issues for themselves.

I don't see how this can be. According to what I've read of your writings on Arnold, he should be joined at the hip with DiFi. Perhaps there is a difference between Arnold and the Democrats. Maybe you should join the party to help beat back the libs! Come on, you'll be glad you did!

Thanks for the bump.

The Elite are a party to which they both belong, imo, separate from the parties they claim to be with.

They gladly spread their munificence around for all to witness and then make the rest of us pay for it down the road.

OK, I'll walk down that road with you for awhile. Still, I think I'll travel on Arnold's side in regards to these props. I havn't actually seen, though you've probably explained, so sorry in advance, but are you for or against 73-77?

"They gladly spread their munificence around for all to witness and then make the rest of us pay for it down the road."

Yeah, there's that. Politics 101 and 2005. Would be nice to see a change. Any real chance of that in the near future?

Change, in the near future, not with attitudes like yours that will grab at anything dressed up and marketed as reform.

Im still undecided on a couple initiatives and depending on how much happens to convince me otherwise, I may vote as many No versus Yes.

I look forward to the televised debate that is in the offing , if the Gub bothers to show up for it, that is.

--====

Are you calling Tom McClintock, Ray Haynes, the Howard Jarvis TaxPayer Association, the CA Chamber of Commerce, the entire Republican party IDIOTS? They are ALL supporting Arnold's propositions, just like republicofdavis and myself. I think we are in good company.

The organizations AGAINST the reform propositions are the Democrat Party, Kerry, Feinstein, the Teacher's Union and the "claim-to-be-conservative-gang-of-few" here.

Now who would any sensible person consider more in tune with reality?

You won't answer others questions about those little items, why should I answer your assertions that because one takes exception, that one is then completely discredited.

Nice try, Ya ought to let Tom get his breath, you're hugging him kind of tight, if ya ask me. ;-)

Can't speak for Norm but:

1) McCLintock made the statement with a gun to his head. A Republican gun. No support for the party platform and no party support in his reelection bid. McClintock knows well what the CAGOP can do if they dislike a "conservative maverick".
2) Yes, a great number of the CAGOP are nearing the edge of idiocy. Much of it revealed daily on this forum. No better example is their support of California's biggest spender, packaging him as California's answer to its fiscal problems. The CAGOP and their Austrian prince are going to "borrow their way out of California's structural imbalance" first with Prop 57 and now with prop 76.

Are you saying that McClintock has to have a gun to his head to force him to NOT make recommendations that are fully aligned with the Democrats? That's what your post says. Are you saying McClintock has sold out to the Democrats and the Republicans had to keep a "gun to his head" to keep him voting with them?

Boy, these are some serious accusations.

I doesn't get any smoother. Oppose specifics but offer a disconnected reason for the motivation.

Along similarly twisted lines Feinstien probably offered:" I'm opposed to Bush's reconstruction efforts along the gulf coast because the hurricane caused needless damage.

Not at all.

McClintock made several concession to the CAGOP to gain their support in his bid for statewide office. Supporting Prop 76, without criticism of its individual components, was one of those concessions. McClintock has a well established public record with regard to borrowing.

On its basic concept, rapid adjustments in a crisis when partisan gridlock prevails, 76 is sound. The devil is in the details.

1) Authorizing borrowing to continue spending increases is counterintuitive to conservatism.
2) Expecting that a big spender like Schwarzenegger, given authority under Prop 76, would suddenly reduce spending stretches the credibility of the CAGOP. A credibility that is already razor thin.

Just the fact the state budget jumped almost 20% in 2 years, and remember who proposed it, is enough to give me the willies.

Folks can Blame the c"rats all they want and with good cause, but they had assistance and I don't mean from the assembly or senate Rs... and whose name is on the final budget dotted line?
