Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, concerned that the decline in President Bush's popularity will pull down his special election measures, is not expected to appear with the president when he visits California next week.
Bush is scheduled to attend a fundraiser in Los Angeles for the Republican National Committee on Thursday and help cut the ribbon Friday at the opening of the new Air Force One exhibit at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.
Although the governor's staff will not confirm his schedule this far in advance, sources said Schwarzenegger is not planning to attend either event. He is tentatively scheduled to campaign next week, possibly in the Central Valley, on the days of the visit.
Neither the governor nor the president is popular with a majority of voters in California. But with the Nov. 8 special election barely three weeks away, the Republican governor needs the support of Democrats and independents -- as well as his party's voters -- to pass his self-styled reform agenda.
Some Republicans said that from a practical viewpoint, it makes sense for the Republican governor of a Democratic-leaning state to keep some miles between himself and the president.
"The reality is that the knee-jerk reaction by the governor's opponents to take him down is to call (Schwarzenegger) a Bush Republican," said Bill Whalen, a research fellow with the Hoover Institution. "So if he hangs out with the president, it's probably a photo op he doesn't need.''

I'd just as soon wish that Bush would go somewhere else.

He is just coming to see all his illegal Mexican friends...
GO IRISH indeed!! My husband is back there this weekend. It is evidently WILD at Notre Dame. As it should be -- they will CREAM USC. hahah.
Rove engineered the RINO Arnold's election, after his earlier RINO candidate Riordan went down in flames, and Arnold immediately started to pay him back by refusing to campaign for the president. Arnold has turned his back on Bush ever since.
Rove engineered the RINO Specter's nomination and election, and Specter paid him back by printing up campain fliers that read, "Vote for Kerry and Specter." Specter has been undermining Bush ever since Bush helped him retain the chair of the Judiciary Committee.
Meantime, Rove had twisted Rick Santorum's arm to make him endorse Specter. As a result, Santorum will likely be defeated in the next election, and has turned against Bush in resentment.
Maybe it would be better to support the conservative base, instead of RINOs, in states where conservatives can be elected. Santorum was elected as a strong pro-life conservative; he will now be defeated as a wobbler.
Bless You Marine.
Give me 50 :-}
It's the bed the President has made for himself, now he's gonna have to sleep in it.
Two chances - Slim and None, and word is that Slim is HIV Positive...
I suppose that would be true if everyone were liberal Democrats. These analysts always talk as if life takes place at a Democrat political convention.
They don't mention that if he were to embrace the President, thrust his arm in the air and say "I'm with this guy on the issues that matter -- national security and the war on terror" then people like me would be more inclined to rally around Arnold.
About 6 million people are going to vote in the upcoming special election that will make or break Schwarzenegger's political future. So Arnold needs 3 million votes to pass any one of his initiatives (probably a bit less). 5.5 million Californians voted for Bush in the last Presidential election. He's a fool to ignore the President and an even bigger fool for overtly avoiding him.
The governor's reform agenda is NOT helped by appearing with Bush and, frankly, I'd rather see Arnold doing the work of the state and of marshaling support for the reforms than some photo-op with El Presidente Bush.
----
Like signing more GReen and GLBT legislation than any governor ever.
Thanks, I feel so much better now.
Arnold is afraid of being seen with the President because of what the leftist rats think of him. The President has done nothing to deserve this, except to help the SOB win in the first place.
Bush-spit, Dan. I don't want Bush anywhere near California. That W's out here attaching his sorry hide to Reagan's legacy and begging for bucks is repulsive. The governor has things to do.
Bush can't be bothered to visit the troops recovering at Balboa Naval Hospital after he "left early" from San Diego and cut that from his agenda in August huh?
Come on, you're in Elk Grove! You know Bush has no love for this state except for dollars . He's just as bad as Clinton in that regard.
Calling all ilk.
CA is a prime recipient of tens of thousands of ILLEGAL immigrants, and President Bush's plan for AMNESTY probably doesn't resonate too well there.
But apparently honoring President Reagan isn't one of them.
