DALLAS - The Roman Catholic diocese of Dallas is setting the record straight: Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers has never been a Catholic.
Acquaintances of Miers have said she worshipped as a Catholic and attended Episcopalian and Presbyterian services. For some 25 years, Miers has been a congregant at Valley View Christian Church where in 1979 she was baptized by full immersion, consistent with the evangelical church's beliefs.
Recently, she and about 150 of the church's 1,200 active members formed a separate congregation after a disagreement about worship styles.
After news media reported that Miers, a longtime Dallas lawyer, had attended Catholic church during her childhood, diocesan officials searched their records because they suspected the information was incorrect.
"We don't normally check records for things like this," said Havard, who also is editor of Texas Catholic newspaper and a deacon, "but this was a prominent situation, we wanted the record to be set straight."
The Catholic church does not keep records of people who may occasionally attend their services.
The White House has said Miers most frequently attends St. John's Episcopal Church the church across from the White House where Bush often worships when she is in Washington.
This is so irritating. What difference would it make if she had attended the church as a child. Are they afraid that the Catholic cooties may have rubbed off on her or something? Sheesh!
So much for the desire of the American press to get the facts straight. Once a "story" line has been set up, it is repeated and repeated. I wonder of this correction will make its way onto the "Evening News."
It's that Catholic V-chip implanted in all of us (V for Vatican). Those signals can hit at any time.
No, the story has been that she was a fallen away Catholic who became an Evangelical Which would turn off a lot of Catholics in the Northeast, who detest Evangelicals and themselves prefer just to stop going to mass.
This reminds me of Sen. Bob Kerry, who some years ago started going to mass in a local catholic church. He'd been receiving the sacraments for a year or so when it occurred to the priest to ask him if he'd ever been confirmed as a Catholic. Turned out he hadn't. Kerry was not aware you're not supposed to receive the sacraments unless you've been confirmed.
My older siblings had that problem, until my parents decided to transfer them out of parochial schools.
:-)
Actually, I think this is their implication... or interpretation... or intent to convey!
V-chip...LOL!
Glad to receive at least one 'ROFL' before the flames descend.
By the way, I Googled the subject and found that the Valley View church was modernizing its worship services seeking to attract new, younger members, and that Miers was part of a breakaway group preferring more traditional services.
With her backround she also seems to be a feminist.
Has NOW rallied to her defense or like with the clintons they only get involved with democrooks?
What? I received First Communion when I was 7 and received that sacrament for many years before I was confirmed at age 11.
Are you confusing Baptism (which is a Catholic sacrament usually received in infancy) with Confirmation?
No, they don't want her to also be attacked for being Catholic as well as an Evangelical... I think you remember Roberts nomination. Whoever reported it went off the map to attempt extra burden (in the eyes of libs), to her situation.
It would be great if she were a Catholic... glad to claim her. The one who did the article was either lazy and assumed St. Johns was a Catholic parish or devious. It only right to have the facts and straighten it out regardless... we have problems already, we have bigger fish to fry than to attack Miers... she's getting enough already.
More like First Communion with Confirmation.
Dairyland is correct. Receiving Communion is not incumbant upon the Sacrament of Confirmation. Perhaps, as Dairyland pointed out, the Senator had not been Baptized or received the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist, in which case he would have been in error.
