Dear Sir,

Good day and compliments. This letter will definitely come to you as a huge surprise, but I implore you to take the time to go through it carefully as the decision you make will go off a long way to determine the future and continued existence of the entire members of my family.

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dr. (Mrs.) Mariam Abacha, the wife of the late head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces of the federal republic of Nigeria who died in a plane crash on the 22nd of October 2005.

My ordeal started immediately after my husband’s death on the morning of 23rd October 2005, and the subsequent take over of government by the last administration. The present democratic government is determined to portray all the good work of my late husband in a bad light and have gone as far as confiscating all my late husband’s assets, properties, freezing our accounts both within and outside Nigeria. As I am writing this letter to you, my son Mohammed Abacha is undergoing questioning with the government. All these measures taken by past/present government is just to gain international recognition.

I and the entire members of my family have been held incommunicado since the death of my husband, hence I seek your indulgence to assist us in securing these funds. We are not allowed to see or discuss with anybody. Few occasions I have tired traveling abroad through alternative means all failed.

It is in view of this I have mandated DR GALADIMA HASSAN, who has been assisting the family to run around on so many issues to act on behalf of the family concerning the substance of this letter. He has the full power of attorney to execute this transaction with you.

My late husband had/has Eighty Million USD ($80,000,000.00) specially preserved and well packed in trunk boxes of which only my husband and I knew about. It is packed in such a way to forestall just anybody having access to it. It is this sum that I seek your assistance to get out of Nigeria as soon as possible before the present civilian government finds out about it and confiscate it just like they have done to all our assets.

I implore you to please give consideration to my predicament and help a widow in need.

May Allah show you mercy as you do so?

Your faithfully,

Dr (Mrs.) Mariam Abacha (M.O.N)

LAGOS, Oct 23 (Reuters) - An airliner that went missing on Saturday night in Nigeria with 116 people on board could have crashed or been hijacked, a spokesman for the Nigerian airport said.

"There are two things, either a crash or a hijack. We don't pray for a crash, which is worse," said Patrick Abah, a spokesman for the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

ThisDayOnline.com - (Nigeria) -

Abuja-bound Bellview Plane Disappears Mid-air

A Bellview airlines late night flight which took off from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja for Abuja yesterday with 108 passengers and six crew members on board, has been declared missing, fueling fears that it may have crashed.

Though it could not be ascertained last night, sources hinted THISDAY that a presidential aide and Chairman of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Waziri Mohammed was aboard the missing aircraft.

THISDAY checks further revealed that the Abuja residence of Mohammed was last night besieged by close associates and family members, wearing mournful faces.

The aircraft with flight number 210 which departed Ikeja at about 8.45 p.m. was reported to have lost contact with the control tower three minutes after take-off.

A spokesman of the Airline, Habib Mohammed told THISDAY last night that an emergency office has been opened at the MMA to collate and assemble relevant information on the missing plane.

Officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) were believed to be making frantic efforts to locate the aircraft. FAAN officials who spoke to THISDAY said although they lost contact with the plane three minutes after take-off, the aircraft is likely to have crashed between Kishi in Oyo State and another town in Kwara state. They however could not ascertain the exact location.

They said that the search and rescue team have swung into action and that an helicopter belonging to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been deployed to join the search.

As at 12 midnight when THISDAY reporter visited the airport, the place was initially deserted. Two staff seen around Bellview Airline office were not willing to offer any information. But as snippets of information on the incidence filterred to the public, relations of passengers began to troop to the airport.

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the atmosphere was very tense.

Several people who had gone there to welcome their relations and officials wore worried look. Several state of the art vehicles were noticed at the VIP area of the arrival section, an indication that several highly placed people may be on board the ill-fated aircraft.

The most recent major air crash in Nigeria occurred about three years ago in Kano when an EAS airliner crashed near the Mallam Aminu Kano airport, killing several people including the then Minister of Sports, Mark Aku and the wife of Lt.-Gen. Jeremiah Useni, Julie and his son.

Although a series of air crashes have occured in recent months across the globe raising fresh fears about air safety, Nigeria had not had any major crash recently. There has however been several near crashes. Among them are the crash landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Internat-ional Airport, Abuja. Also another plane over ran the MMA Ikeja Lagos runway due largely to pot holes on the run way. Another major incident was at Port Harcourt where a plane ran into a herds of cattle on the runway during a midnight landing.

Shortly before THISDAY went to bed this morning, officials of FAAN and Bellview Airlines summoned relations of passengers who had trooped to the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed airport, to the international conference centre for a briefing on the development.

LAGOS, Nigeria - A passenger jet carrying 117 people crashed shortly after takeoff from Nigeria's largest city, but more than half of those onboard survived, officials said Sunday after search teams reached the wreckage.

The Boeing 737, which was en route to the capital, Abuja, lost contact with the control tower five minutes after taking off from the international airport in Lagos at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, said Jide Ibinola, a spokesman for the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria.

The flight is popular among Nigerians and expatriates shuttling between the two cities.

"More than half of those on board survived," said Abilola Oloko, a spokesman for Oyo state, the site of the crash. Oloko urged "all medical personnel to proceed to the crash scene, if they can."

Search teams located the downed aircraft, operated by Nigerian-run Bellview Airlines, near the town of Kishi, 120 miles north of Lagos, police Spokesman Bode Ojajuni said.

Representatives of many countries gathered at the airport to find out if any of their citizens were on board the flight.

The airline said 117 people were on board — 111 passengers and six crew members.

Ibinola said the craft was headed to Abuja, on what was supposed to have been a 50-minute flight. There was no immediate indication the crash was terrorism-related.

President Olusegun Obasanjo's office said in a statement that the leader was personally overseeing search and rescue operations and that he was "asks all Nigerians to pray for all those aboard the plane and their families."

Bellview, one of about a dozen local airlines, is a privately owned Nigerian company that operates a fleet of mostly Boeing 737s on internal routes and throughout West Africa. Bellview first began flying about 10 years ago and has not suffered a crash before.

In May 2002, an EAS Airlines jet — another domestic carrier — plowed into a heavily populated neighborhood after takeoff at the airport outside the northern city of Kano, killing 154 people in the plane and on the ground.
