It only hurts if the prospective employer thinks or knows its a gang tatoo.

One of my friends almost lost his shot at a job because he had a large tatoo on his arm with a skull that had a dagger going through it and the words "death before dishonor".

The guy interviewing him was very uncomfortable and was leaning against him, when my friend finally explained what the tatoo was from and why he had it.

At that point, an apology was made and my buddy got the job.

It is one scary tatoo though.

Not just gang tatoos. Here in the midwest, at least, jailbirds just love to get the crude india ink tatoos, especially on their hands, knuckles and forearms. These are not the colorful tatoos you are used to seeing but the crude, faded, blue tatoos. They are often just initials or a cross or something. Any employer knows that tatoos like this are a sure sign that the person you are dealing with has done some time.
