2,000 gone: And a new republic is born
Manchester Union Leader ^ | October 27, 2005 | Editorial

THE MAJOR story in the national press yesterday was the death of Sgt. George Alexander Jr., 34, of Killeen, Texas, though his name was not always mentioned in the reports. Sgt. Alexander was America's 2,000th military death in Iraq.

Much is remarkable about the men and women who have died in our ongoing effort to liberate Iraq. Most remarkable is that every one of them enlisted voluntarily. According to The New York Times, a fifth of the dead had enlisted two, three or four times.

Interviews with Iraq veterans who have re-enlisted show how deeply many of them believe in the cause. They would rather risk their lives to see this war through than leave before the Iraqis are ready to protect and govern themselves.

The other big news yesterday, which received far less attention, was the certification of the Iraqi constitution. Iraqis voted 78 percent to 21 percent in favor of the constitution. Soon, Iraqis will vote for their new government.

To pretend that there is no connection between Iraq's progress toward democratic governance and the 2,000 brave American service members who died there is to deny the obvious. Those 2,000 Americans were not lost in vain. They died to make America safer by making Iraq freer. The best way to honor their memory is, as President Bush said, to complete the mission for which they gave their lives.

I saw John Kerry on TV yesterday, claiming that Iraq was the most disasterous foreign policy miscalculation in the history of the country. The guy has no credibility at all. You'd think that since he was in Vietnam, he'd realize that he could not get away with that statement.

He has lied so much that even he believes them.

And no decent knowledge of history either.

Ironic that he played such an important role in voting for what he considers the most disasterous foriegn policy miscalculation in history. Doesn't say much about his own belief in his ability to make important "calculaitons."

Scum like Kerry will go down in history as exactly what they are -- treasonous filth who played their politics on the backs of this nations' heros.

I wanted to repeat your statement.

Democrats will not be vindicated by history. Instead future generations will scratch their heads in amazement that the nation was endangered by the stupidity of the Democrat party and their all consuming lust for political power.

As an informed non-American I don't think Vietnam was a miscalculation either. The lefties backstabbed Nixon's honourable peace and hung the Vietnamese out to dry. The left knew what they were doing - no miscalculation there.

The poorest foreign policy decision in recent years IMO was leaving the Cubans in the lurch at the Bay of Pigs. 50 to 1 odds and Castro still took days to beat them down. It would have taken very little to have reversed the disaster. But don't you guys beat yourselves up about Vietnam: you did what had to be done.

For sure -- and that is exactly today's situation...especially staring at a party that could put a TOTALLY UNQUALIFIED Marxist charlatan, like Hitlery, into the Presidential mix...it is horrifying.

Thousands of inner city kids die each year, murdered, by gang violence. Where is the outrage from Kerry and the other Liberal Politicians?

The number of our Brave Troops that have given their lives for the freedom of a Nation, shows complete disregard, on the part of the Liberals, for this sacrifice and complete disregard for the carnage and and death that goes on the inner cities of the United States, this carnage seem to be of little consequence to, Hillary, Kerry, Kennedy, Schumer, Sheehan, and the rest of the Liberal hacks.

This is precisely why I am not worried about the 2006 elections. Kerry and the dems just can't help themselves. They have invested politically in U.S. failure in Iraq and don't even try to hide it anymore. So, rather than doing the smart thing and moving forward (to position himself for 2008) Kerry is trying to re-validate his 2004 loss. In addition, other dems are now planning to vote against defense department appropriations bills. Even if the American public was anti-war, which they are not, they just don't approve of the way it is being handled and want results, but even if they were anti-war, would the American public really want our troops to have their support cut off? I think NOT.

The dems are just on the wrong side of all the issues. They can scream "culture of corruption" all they want, but at the end of the day, the voters vote issues.
