Thirty-four years after he left Vietnam, Frank Korona of Georges Township is helping a comrade be recognized for valiant action during the war.
Korona, 59, now the cooperative education coordinator at Fayette County Area Vocational-Technical School, has given a statement on behalf of the late Dr. William Illingworth of Bedford County, regarding combat action against intense enemy fire they were both involved in on Oct. 12, 1970.

The statement is being used to nominate Illingworth for a Silver Star.
TOPICS: Culture/Society; Foreign Affairs
KEYWORDS: hero; silverstar; vietnam
Frank Korona's wife is my cousin. I knew he served as an infantry platoon leader in Vietnam but until I read this article I had no idea that he is a genuine, decorated hero. Silver Stars are not handed out just because you are there. His story as well as that of Dr. Illingworth must not be forgotten. I'm glad that it's finally in print.

Thanks for the post. That's just down the road. Many heroes walk among us and we have no idea.

"Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue..." Still is, though you wouldn't know it from the msm and the dems.
