'Feminised' surgeries put men off seeing GPs

Men are being put off visiting their GP because doctors' surgeries are "too female" and not open after work, according to a survey.

Some of those questioned suggested men-only surgeries should be held in betting shops, pubs or golf clubs because they felt out of place when they visited their GP. They complained that surgeries were "feminised" through the decor and display material.

The poll among 300 men by the Men's Health Forum, found that the commonest complaint was over opening hours. Men wanted to be able to see their doctor in the evening or on Saturday.

Other suggestions to improve services for men included showing cowboy films or football matches in waiting rooms. Many wanted more male nurses and more male receptionists.

Men also said they would like to be able to book appointments online.

One man commented: "Most health campaigns seem to be aimed at women, children and the elderly. There is nothing for we lowly men."

Patricia Hewitt, the Health Secretary, said yesterday that GP surgeries should be open in the evening and at weekends if patients wanted them to.

A clarifying note: surgery is a British term for what we would call a physician's or dentist's office.

No red-blooded male wants more male nurses at the doctor's office. More attractive female nurses, maybe. Male nurses? Are you freakin' kiddin' me?

Even when you pay for it, it can be difficult to find a doctor open outside of normal work hours...and it places a high threshhold on concerns that don't stop you from working.

There is one seeming contradiction I've noticed for some time. Women complain that doctors do not take their complaints seriously and that many suffer because the health of their children/spouse are more important. Yet, I see women spend far more time going to the doctor than men and most men I know would rather suffer than make the time to go see a doctor (including myself) unless it is urgent.

So which is it? Is modern medicine targeted toward women and women's problems or is medicine mostly a man's world and the women are left to complain about being ignored?

Or do women just like to complain?

That is the subject of a whole other thread.

This in ambiguous. Is your "myself" in the group of men who would rather suffer, or in the group of doctors?

Oops, sorry. The "myself" is in the group that avoids seeing doctors. I have seen them lately but I'm stuck on that HMO merry-go-round where I can't get my meds if I don't jump through their hoops.

I'm surprised that anything could be considered too feminine for the euro male.
