Speaker Hastert's Release on the Deficit Reduction Act

The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. The bill passed by a vote of 217-215.

“The American people have entrusted the members of this Congress with a huge task. It is one House Republicans do not take lightly. We have a duty to maintain the American people’s trust and reject the urge to just write blank checks.

“Unfortunately, my colleagues on the other side of the aisle disagree. In fact, this bill gives us a pretty clear picture of what they are for. They are for raising taxes writing blank checks creating bigger government and saddling our children with mountains of debt. By opposing this bill, they are for disrupting America’s economic stability – the same stability that has given our workers jobs and paychecks to care for their families.

“Theirs is the wrong solution for America.

“We must be responsible with the American people’s money. Even after the hurricanes, we have seen that our nation’s economic engine continues to churn thanks to Republican pro-jobs policies. The deficit is decreasing. Homeownership is up. And more and more Americans are finding jobs to take care of their families. This growth must continue.

“More importantly, this bill finds $50 billion dollars in savings to keep America on sound economic footing. It rejects the tax hikes pushed by the other side. Let me be clear for a moment: a tax increase has never created a single job. Tax hikes kill jobs and encourage government spending. A tax-and-spend strategy, like the Democrats have offered, just isn’t the answer.

“I am proud that House Republicans have put in the long hours and hard work necessary to make this happen. This bill is a victory for the American people and the economy of the United States.”

In case anyone missed it, the GOP Congressmen stayed up late last night and worked to pass the Budget Reduction Act of 2005 much to the chagrin of Negative Nancy Pelosi and her crew. Anyway, incase you missed it, here is what the Speaker released, although his floor statement was powerfully moving.

This is precisely the sort of thing the Republicans must do. They must make the dems vote WHAT THEY REALLY BELIEVE, time after time after time. No longer can Pelosi be allowed to get away with complaining about "deficits" when what she is really speaking about isn't cutting spending, but rather, increasing spending and increasing taxation even further.

Go get Repubs, even if the bill falls waaaay short of what is really needed, at least it puts the dems money where their mouths are.

the MsM is spinning it as "cuts"

its a reduction of increased spending.

a cut would be to decrease spending. not just remove the increase and leaving it at the same level of spending.

MsM is making it look like big bad republicans are stopping children from having hot lunches in schools, and taking families off of food stamps.

the MSM is a joke .... all we are doing is denying the raise the poor gets next year... we are denying the people who refuse to work in this country, their annual raise... the parasites who dont contribute to this country in the first place....

but leave it up to the MSM to spin it.

We won a big fight.

We got the majority of the cuts.

We also exposed posers on the GOP side.

We will replace these jerks with conservatives.

We will get ANWR in 2007.

You are right.

It is more of a slowing of the increase of spending items.

Still, it is a good cut in the overall picture.

I stayed up to watch this. It was a long night, but ultimately somewhat rewarding.

The senate was also up late passing the tax bill, fighting off plan after plan to gouge the oil companies/consumers of oil to pay for more pork.

There's one more thing we're going to have to do in 2007, at least the way things are going now: keep President Bush.

If we really mean what we say, from the President down, about confronting large issues, and not passing them on to future generations, then we are going to have to have this fight about legality and ideology, and about the proper role of the three branches of government, the least of which is whether or not we're willing to throw out a twice elected President over what amounts to a pi$$ing match from the Democrats. (we just have to make sure that they and the RINOs don't get the votes).
