PHOENIX - The former vicar general of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix was arrested Monday.
The Maricopa County Attorney's Office, which disclosed the arrest and scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon, would not immediately say what Monsignor Dale Fushek was accused of.
Fushek resigned as pastor of St. Timothy Catholic Church in Mesa in April after someone claimed to have recovered a repressed memory involving sexual improprieties by Fushek in 1985.
Those allegations followed one by a man who said that when he was 14, Fushek watched another priest sexually assault him.
Fushek has denied the allegations, and it was not clear Monday whether his arrest was related.
In case you hadn't heard ...
I hadn't heard, but it hits pretty close to home for me. Father Dale married the wife and I and baptized our first kid. A few weeks ago I was called for jury duty and almost got stuck on another preist case for child abuse. When I stood up and said the guy who married us is accused of something related, that got me out of it right away.
" . . . recovered a repressed memory "
I call B.S.
99.9999% of all the repressed memories are IMPLANTED false memories by mental health workers with an agenda.
This was the Vicar General under the last Bishop, the one who performed a hit and run on a pedestrian and tried to get the car repaired before he was discovered. The pedestrian (who probably ran in front of the car) might have lived if the Bishop had stopped and gotten help. Instead, he was hit by a car in the opposite direction. The new bishop is much much better, and is cleaning a very dirty house.
Don't they have a cleaning lady?
Gotta disagree with you on this. These memories are almost always implanted by lawyers who stand to make a quick, easy 33% on the settlement.Lots of lawyers have bought their 16 year old daughters a Ferrari thanks to these "recovered memories".
Regardless of source, it's false memories.
I understand your feelings. About two years ago I found out on an FR thread that a priest who had buried several of my relatives had been tried, convicted and removed. Very disconcerting.
I agree. This whole repressed memory idea is bunk. Someone is trying to get on what he perceives as a gravy train.
"Repressed memory" sends up a red flag for me. It's too easy to implant memories in a patient. I won't believe this one unless and until there is objective confirmation. Otherwise it sounds as if the psychologist and the lawyer are ganging up to raid the Church's coffers.
The Republic put up this story an hour ago, with details.

Kind of like the Witch Trials of the past, only you get a pile of cash now instead of a smelly bonfire.
On a personal note, I just wish they'd keep the noise down when they have their "contemporary" outdoor mass -- it's like a Sunday morning rock concert in my backyard. Love thy neighbor, people!
That repressed memories stuff is a huge bunch of crap...
Did he quit in 94? No further allegations since then. Have to wonder.
repressed memory-isolated incident alert #_____.
That pedestrian might also have benefitted from an opportunity to be absolved of his sins before death, but Bishop O'Brien was not going to allow himself to suffer indignity for the salvation of the man's soul. Fortunately, O'Brien was retired and Phoenix has a wonderfully Catholic bishop in Bishop Thomas Olmsted.
