There'll be no last-minute shopping for turkeys or trimmings on Thanksgiving Day in Massachusetts.

The state has warned the upscale Whole Foods supermarket chain that it will risk criminal charges under the state's centuries-old "blue laws" if it goes ahead with plans to open on the holiday.

The office of Attorney General Thomas Reilly issued a legal opinion after officials at a Whole Foods competitor, Shaw's Supermarkets, wrote him a letter asking him to block the opening, The Boston Globe reported.

Welcome to America! We're always thinking of new ways to punish capitalism.

Welcome to America! We're always thinking of new ways to punish capitalism.

Actually, it's a very old law. And if we are of a mind that certain laws are no longer useful, we should repeal them rather than ignore them.

I think people will be able to live one day without Whole Foods being open.

Good point. And isn't it Whole Foods who has said it would no longer carry lobsters if it can be shown that they suffer pain? Ugh!

LOL.

You're coming very close to suggesting that religion is the enemy of capitalism. BTW, blue laws are anything but new.

Why should a Government tell someone they can't conduct business on any day?

Not the point! Punishing a business for being open...

If I need to explain why this is wrong, there's no hope for America.

Hmmm... I wonder how much Shaws (or the owners) have donated to Reilly's re-election war chest?

Commies and atheists have no use for America's Christian
traditions or holidays..

The heart and soul of the America of our founders and pioneers
is in the holiday the brave, hard working, faithful Pilgrims and their friendship with the land's earlier inhabitants gave us.

We used to have a blue law here in Texas, but grocery stores could be open any day of the week. Isn't Whole Foods a grocery store??

Blue laws were voted down decades ago in most of the US. I'm surprised MA still has them.

Of course, being a drunken bastard fool and drowning an innocent girl is well tolerated in the Bay State!

Punishing a business for breaking the law. If you don't like it, change the law.

AMEN to that statement. Also as I was growing up it was nice to have families together on the holidays instead of having them work. My father worked for Pennsylvania Power and Light Company. It was a twenty-four hour, three hundred and sixty-five day operation. He was not home sometimes the family was together. People can shop ahead. We do have modern day food storage devices.

If religion is the cause of laws that keep commerce from operating, then yes. Religion is an enemy of capitalism.

Why do you think the Middle East is so poor? Their religion forbids them from taking part in usury. Actually, Christianity used to restrict usury for centuries. Luckily, they started taking notice of how well the Jews were doing and decided it was probably a better policy.

The law in question mandates that all supermarkets be closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. This lets employees have the day to be with family and upholds the principle that some things are more important than the mighty buck.

Whole Foods has been cheating in the past few years, violating this law. Their competitor is calling them on it.

Actually, that might be the case. Look at the concentrations of liberals, and compare them to the areas where the Puritans and Quakers settled.

Many people have argued that 'liberalism' is a form of displaced Protestant radicalism. In the Commonwealth during the 1650s, the jump from from Puritanism to communism was already being made. Look at what the Levellers and the Fifth Monarchy Men were trying to do.
