Parents criticize sex ed chart (How do you define abstinence?)
The Gazette ^ | November 23, 2005 | Peggy Vaughn

The county school system is re-thinking its definition of sexual abstinence after complaints from two parents that their children were receiving incorrect and even risky information in sex ed classes.

Karen Sees and Cindy Richards said the ‘‘contraception comparison chart” used in eighth-grade health class at Herbert Hoover Middle School describes three types of abstinence: No intercourse, withdrawal (ejaculation outside of the body) and rhythm (no intercourse during ovulation).

‘‘Since when did the term abstinence change to include the two most ineffective forms of birth control possible?” said Cindy Richards of Potomac. ‘‘Here we have been teaching our kids that abstinence means not having sex, period. What kind of message is this [chart] sending?”

Sees, also of Potomac, first became aware of the chart while helping her son study for health class in late October. She said she immediately e-mailed her son’s health education teacher about her concerns.

‘‘I’m all for teaching sex education, but I want it to be accurate information,” she said. ‘‘I was told by my son’s health teacher that withdrawal and rhythm are considered abstinence because [sexual partners] are refraining from what they want to do.”

Both Planned Parenthood of Maryland and the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington agreed with the parents that the definition was faulty.

Now we understand why they say "abstinence doesn't work".

They aren't trying abstinence. They are redefining the term.

The Sex Positive agenda seeks to see everyone sexually active at every age. They declare that abstinence is unhealthy because it is a supression of sexual desires. Same take they have on homosexuality.

If Kids don't have sex the abortion industry would take a cut in profits and that is unacceptable to Planned Parenthood and the like. I bet a pro-abortion group is behind this chart.

The three types of abstinance:

You choose not to.
You're prevented (i.e. solitary confinement).
You can't (i.e. impotent).

'Withdrawal' is a plank in the Democrat, party platform.

What's this? Leftists re-defining a word? Well ...

They did it with liberal.
They did it with gay.
They did it with marriage.
Now they're doing with abstinence.

These communists are "doing it" all over the place. But it's just about sex. Move along.

Planned Parenthood said the definition was incorrect. I am surprised they did the proper thing for one time.

This is the legacy of "depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is"

Anything they don't like, just redefine what it means. Up until recently, millions, maybe billions, of people thought they knew what "marriage" was. Nice of the loony left to show up and enlighten us.

"I was told by my son’s health teacher that withdrawal and rhythm are considered abstinence because [sexual partners] are refraining from what they want to do."

Anyone who would argue that these two forms of modifying sexual activity could be considered forms of "abstinence" is either a complete idiot or completely disingenuous. Either way, such a person cannot be trusted to convey important information to children.

........such a person cannot be trusted to convey important information to children.

Well, that's what they do in schools, impart all kinds of information to children. Parents be warned.

They know exactly what it means, they just choose to do exactly what they want.

Parents have started wondering, what in the hell is going on in schools?

It's about time.

That's probably only because it didn't include PP's 4th definition of abstinence: "You sucked the post-coital non-viable tissue mass into a sink, so it's a do-over."
