Irish man who died of overdose had kidney removed in Spain (Urban Legend Comes True??)
The Sunday Tribune (Dublin, Ireland) ^ | Sunday, Nov 26, 2005 | Isabel Hayes

A KIDNEY was removed from the body of a 27-year-old Irish man who died from a drug overdose in Ibiza last August, the Sunday Tribune has learned.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to the family of Finbarr Kelly that one of his kidneys was removed before his body was returned home to Ireland last August. His family had not given permission for such a procedure.

The report of the autopsy carried out in Spain failed to record this information.

Kelly, a business graduate from Sligo town, travelled to Playa d'en Bossa, Ibiza, last August with a group of 11 friends. On their first night, Kelly got separated from his friends in Space nightclub and died in the early hours of 4 August from an overdose of liquid ecstasy (GBH).

That night, 25 people received medical attention in the hospital in Playa d'en Bossa for symptoms associated with contaminated substances.

Kelly's parents, George and Maura Kelly, have always insisted their son did not take drugs and believe they were ingested without his knowledge. A spokesman for the family said they were extremely concerned to learn that his kidney had been removed.

"This is a family that has been through a tremendous amount of pain, " said Gabriel McSharry. "All they can find out was that his kidney was removed in Spain and they don't know any more. This was a young man, one of the best students of his class, who went away on his holidays and died tragically on his first night away. They deserve to know what happened to him."

The missing kidney was only discovered when an autopsy was carried out on Kelly's body in Dublin. The family had investigated the possibility that Finbarr was born with one kidney, but have been able to rule that out. The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed this weekend that it is assisting the Kelly family with their investigations.

I believe they do. It is suspicious. Of course lots of parents think their kids would never do drugs, but a missing kidney raises some questions.

Upon further investigation, I suspect they will find the kidney was removed at the time of death. European nations take first and figure out if they can tax you later.

getting killed for your kidney or another body part. Ususally the legend has people waking up in a bath filled with ice water.

I was drugged once overseas (in Athens) and woke up in a bath of ice water (long story) but nothing seemed to be missing except several hundred dollars..

He was not killed for his kidney. If he had been, they would have taken both, and possibly some other organs as well.

Someone who understands autopsies should chime in and tell us if kidney removal and testing is normal, especially in cases of death by overdose of contaminated drugs.

I suspect they were trying to find the contaminants and the kidney got separated from the body -- sloppy but not nefarious. No one in their right mind would pay for a kidney taken from a drug addict.

I think the airlines lost his kidney. They lose luggage and stuff all the time.

I agree. I just wondered if that is what his family is thinking.
