NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States needs to set milestones for progress, not a firm withdrawal date, before it can leave Iraq, Virginia governor and prospective Democratic presidential candidate Mark Warner said on Monday.
"This Democrat doesn't think we need to re-fight how we got into (the Iraq war). I think we need to focus more on how to finish it," Warner said.
"To set an arbitrary deadline or specific date is not appropriate," he said. "... It is incumbent on the president to set milestones for what he believes will be the conclusion."
Warner outlined an Iraq policy during his appearance before New York's Asia Society, and said he might run for president after his term as governor expires in January. "I clearly want to be part of the national debate," he said.

Pure Presidential Material, for sure.
Gov. Warner has read the polls. This sounds like a line from the Clinton playbook.
If he can get Black support away from Hillary, he will get the nomination. Blacks prefer red state Democrats to chichi White liberals.
In my opinion, it is NOT good for the Republican party tho...
The Democrats' "cha-cha" strategy. ahem...
Interesting that he makes Hagle seem like a panzie.
PS: I do tend to agree with him though. ;^)
Yep, he will up his "centrist" image until about 4 months before the primaries begins and then he will run as far left as he can. If he gets the nomination, he will run back to the center.

Arguably, that was JF-ingKerry's problem. He couldn't make a clean break from the anti-war left in order to run as a centrist. He really did want to run on a platform of running a better war, but couldn't do that and keep his Soros crowd happy. In a strange way, we owe the far Left a debt as they kept Kerry from winning.
Sure Warner is operating out of heavy cynicism, figuring being the only Democrat with a responsible foreign policy will differentiate him from the field, but I am liking this move of his. He is write re-fighting the reasons we went to war isn't what we should be about.. we should be about winning the damn war. Unfortunately, the Democrats in the media and the Congress have weakened us with opportunistic inquiries and media blitzes and 16 words and on and on.
Warner has his moistened fingertip on the pulse of American politics.... the American people are sick of the commissions and the flashy dressing Ambassadors... they just want to win the damn thing because they love their Country and think thw world of the heroes in Uniform. We don't want to lose and dishonor ourselves there so the Left can feel vindicated... that might be the Left's raison d'etre, but it's not the American people's.
At this point, I'd vote for Warner before I would McCain.. McCain's anti-torture crap has been as much a mission enervating endeavor as anything the Left has done.
how about an all-virginia Presidential election? (Allen)
HOw soon is Warner up for de-commission?
Maybe he's just their excuse to mention Hillary! is running.
Yep, and that will be ANY 'Rat's problem, too. The 'Rat core is so far left that they will quickly abandon a "centrist" and go to their base parties (Greens, Socialist Democrats of America, CPUSA, etc).
Especially a vicious bigot and daughter of a vicious bigot like Hillary Rodham Clinton.
