Bush administration officials yesterday angered lawmakers by refusing to take a position on illegal aliens obtaining U.S. driver's licenses and avoiding questions about its decision to recognize Mexican identification cards.
Officials testifying before the House Select Committee on Homeland Security said they are reviewing what documentation is secure and reliable, but evaded direct questions on the matricula consular cards now accepted by California and New Mexico to obtain driver's licenses.
Critics say the cards issued by the Mexican Embassy are easily falsified and used by illegal aliens to establish residency. Stewart Verdery, Homeland Security assistant secretary, was asked directly whether states should issue identification cards to people who are in the United States illegally.
"I am not aware that the department or administration has taken a position on that," Mr. Verdery said. A frustrated Rep. John Shadegg, Arizona Republican, responded: "It seems to me the administration had better get a policy, pretty quick."
Republican lawmakers also questioned officials about a recent Treasury Department decision allowing the matricula cards to be accepted as legal identification by financial institutions.
Officials, including Mr. Verdery, testified on Capitol Hill earlier this year that the FBI and Homeland Security Department believed the cards are not secure and pose a threat to homeland security.
The administration's decision to accept the cards was announced just as lawmakers were leaving town in advance of Hurricane Isabel and caused an "uproar in Congress," said Rep. Christopher Shays, Connecticut Republican.

I'm waiting for Bush to propose letting Mexico join the United States.
If they do it, then every single American should pay the $29 to get the Matricula card. Then give a phony SSN number to work. When the money stops coming in, they will act.
a) the Bush admin is brain dead and the RINO's are fully in charge;
b) in a 'Rovian' strategy designed to help in the off-year election, Bush is provoking the Congressional Republicans into doing something stronger about immigration than they are otherwise inclined to do.
I'm inclined to believe (a) is the truth; but after the Miers' nomination stampeded the African wildlife in the Senate into supporting Alito, I hope it's (b).
Or possibly the announcement the US is joining Mexico...
Imagine America with a mixture of Mexican feudalism and Canadian socialism and you see the future.
"If they do it, then every single American should pay the $29 to get the Matricula card. Then give a phony SSN number to work. When the money stops coming in, they will act."
Great idea.
I'll say it again. Bush's incompetence, inaction, and arrogance on the border security issue will facilitate Hillary's election in 2008.
Is Fox blackmailing Bush?
For the life of me I can't figure out why Bush is so adamant about shoving illegal immigrants down our throats when a large segement of his conservative base is opposed.
The only thing I can think of is that Fox has something on Bush.
I'm afraid your "a" analysis is the correct one. If Bush doesn't start doing something concrete to secure the borders he ought to be impeached. He's supposed to be in charge of defending the country. He's either indifferent to the threat or he's afraid of Hispanic backlash if he tries to do anything. The majority in this country no longer can control the destiny of their own homeland. As a president Bush is a major disappointment. I'm beginning to think he's just incompetent.
this should be unbelievable....except, I believe it.
Pathetic.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>........
no need to wait for 2008 in 2006 we will see many conservative voters stay home..Congress is willing to sell us all out for some crazy idea about the unification of Mexico and Canada with USA..I am in shock over what Bush said today still supporting the Amnesty program and no real action on the Borders ..Who Is this GUY??
You'll note that Hillary is making all the right noises on this issue. Regardless of her motives, she will be proven right by an angry electorate. The GOP had better wake up fast...
As soon as Bush makes a stand, the Democraps will take the opposite position and cry through the media about the unfairness of it all.
Frankly, I'd love to hear him say 'the law is the law and illegal is illegal'. The longer he keeps away from his position the more likely the Democraps will triangualte the position and tap the seething resentment against the current catch and release system.
That speech today changes nothing. Pay no attention to what they say--watch what they do.

Yup, just avoiding the issues and questions "Americans want answers to!"
Officials testifying before the House Select Committee on Homeland Security said they are reviewing what documentation is secure and reliable, but evaded direct questions on the matricula consular cards now accepted by California and New Mexico to obtain driver's licenses.
Ah yes, nothing like clear policies, direct action, and putting Americans first!
I am "-" THIS CLOSE to letting the damn LIEberals impeach this clown...if it wouldn't hurt our troops or our position in the world, I'd say do it...I swear!
No more Bushies...no more RINO/Country Clubber/Rockefellerites....PERIOD!
