STILLWELL OPINION: Mustn't See Liberal TV
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 11/30/5 | Cinnamon Stillwell

It isn't easy finding network television shows worth watching these days. Between the seizure-inducing visual editing, the MTV-like onslaught of montage sequences accompanied by the latest pop tunes, the numbingly unfunny laugh-track comedies and the nonsensical plot lines, the days of must-see TV are a distant memory.

For fans of television shows that focus on law enforcement, the choices are even slimmer. While there is a plethora of programs to choose from, politics are an unavoidable part of the equation. Just as there is bias in print media, television is likewise mired in the politics of those who create it. Judging by the product, the creators are uniformly liberal.

Probably the worst offender is the "Law

& Order" franchise on NBC. Pick any incarnation of the series and one is certain to find more preaching than entertainment. The original "Law & Order" has lost almost all of its initial "ripping stories from the headlines" grittiness and devolved into nothing more than a platform for liberal politics. The last couple of seasons were so biased that many conservative viewers simply chose to change the channel.

Watching the Detectives

For those who remained loyal, the final straw was the Nov. 16 episode, which centered on an anti-illegal immigration group called the Countrymen Border Watch of America. Of course, the Countrymen were just a thinly veiled reference to the Minuteman Project, a civilian border patrol group that reports illegal alien activity to the authorities.

In fact, initial advertisements for the show used the Minuteman title, but producers reportedly decided to change the name of the group for the episode after receiving a barrage of complaints. It made little difference, for the episode was nothing more than ...exercise in slander.

You're not even safe watching documentaries. It's amazing how much propaganda can be crammed into a study of African wildlife or space travel. IF I detect even the slightest hint of that crap, I change channels. And since that ordure permeates every corner of the electronic jungle, I don't watch much TV. I certainly wouldn't waste any time on cops 'n' robbers "dramas." There's nothing new to be said on that theme.

I watch zero TV these days. If I hear that a show is good, I'll buy it on DVD later. ;)

one of the preachiest of the preachy cop shows has to be "Cold Case" on CBS. The show is consumed with such liberal preoccupations as anti-abortion activism, disturbed Vietnam veterans, transgender hero(ines), interracial lesbian love affairs, draft dodgers, McCarthyism and demonizing Christians.

I'll say!

I've given up on this show, despite finding the premise intriguing. Every single episode has to tie in some liberal agenda. This means that identity of the villain is always utterly predictable - it's the straight white guy, stupid.

"It isn't easy finding network television shows worth watching these days."

Maybe this is why I have not watched a network television show (other than sports) in 10 years. Never seen a single reality show and don't feel I'm missing a thing.

I used to love Law and Order, but quit this season, can't stand the obvious liberal bias. Lately all I watch are re-runs of Seinfeld (still the funniest show ever made), and John Gibson on Fox News.

Watching 24 and The Shield are the remedies to bad liberal TV.

FCC Commissioner, Newton Minnow's 1958 pronouncement of TV being "...a vast wasteland..." couldn't be more true today. The networks in addition to spewing biased opinion and spin camouflaged as news have provided us with mind numbingly stupid programming. Were it not for the History Channel and from time to time Discovery and TLC I wouldn't watch television at all. My only indulgence is South Park with its wickedly irreverent satire of anything and everything. The recent global warming episode was a hoot.

The original "Law & Order" has lost almost all of its initial "ripping stories from the headlines" grittiness and devolved into nothing more than a platform for liberal politics.

All TV shows, which last more then a few years and are highly rated, seem to go through the same cycle:

Seasons 1-2 (or 3) -- Unique approach, fresh stars, excellent scripts, high ratings. Maybe some emmy nominations.

Seasons 3 ( or 2)-4 -- Stars ask for higher salaries, some change, new faces come in, scripts are still good, ratings level off or drop slightly. Stories begin to revolve around the characters and not the original show idea. Start to win those emmy's

Seasons 5 and beyond -- Scripts no longer "fresh", stars are now the main plot element. Relationships between the stars now a running theme, viewership declines, fresh faces/bigger names are brought in to increase viewer interest. Emmy's now a memory.

I was completely outraged by the portrayal of the Minutemen (they actually used the word "Minutemen" in the previews the week before and judging from the clips, I KNEW it was going to be a slam).

I also hope Fred Thompson quits the show, since he's portrayed as the heartless, cruel right-wing DA who doesn't care about justice, only politics. I used to love this show, and never missed it. Actually, the "Criminal Intent" version isn't overly infected with politics, so I still watch that. Never watched the "Special Victims Unit" - don't care to see children killed, kidnapped or raped by animals masquerading as adults.

Law & Order began blatently espousing liberal viewpoints after The Republicans took control of Congress in 1994.

Sorry, I meant to add after that:

Stars also begin to push their agenda's as they now control the show to a large extent.

Yeah, but we have to wait until January for the new season of 24.

Law & Order began blatently espousing liberal viewpoints ... 1994.

Which was their fourth season, so it fits the timeline, which was not meant to be exact, outlined above.

L&A SVU is ok, but I didn't like alot of the overt Male bashing.

I try really hard to extricate myslef from politics and really try to "Willingly Suspend Disbelief" that is key to fiction. Hell I continue to enjoy ER and even The West Wing by laughing off their comical slams. ER is the most pretentious show EVER

If I had a Nielsen box that sh!t wouldn't even spend 3 seconds on my TV because we can't give ratings to people that slam Conservatism :)

I couldn't name 2 shows that are popular today. It has been years since I watched any show regularly...it might have been MST3000. All I watch now are sports events, news, cartoons with my kids (gotta keep an eye on what they're watching, plus gives a point of common experience) and an occasional random show, normally on the History channel or Food channel. If I had a Nielson box they'd probably remove it because it wouldn't be getting enough action.

Great article. Brent Bozell has some competition on the entertainment front.
