Bush hit the exact point he wanted to. He didn't miss at all.
Now, was he right? I don't think so.

but requiring employers to verify that their workers are legal It's been the law for decades. The form is an I-9 (INS Form 9) which every employer has to have on every employee indicating which documents were used to verify US citizenship. I trained employers on its use in the 90's. Note: every employer ... every employee. It just isn't enforced.

In this order:
#1. Israeli style defense barrier between US and Mexico (easily built, and for us CHEAP!)
#2. Interior enforcement. Simple step, EVERY new hire must verify SS# before beginning ANY new job. (this can already be done with the Internet, or even, (shock!) the telephone!)
Then, after measuring where we want our population and culture to be as time goes by, we can talk about where future immigrants fit in to OUR America.

Bushs tough talk on immigration... ...was just that: talk. Nothing more. Meanwhile, his actions show that he doesn't give a good rip about the demands of the GOP base.

How to take care of illegal immigration:
- Build an Israeli style fence at the Mexico border
- 10,000 highly mobile troops on that border
- Federal SS# database that all employees must be verified with. Visa or MasterCard could set this up within a month
- Employer sanctions against those who hire illegal aliens
- Left with no jobs, no income, and most illegal aliens will leave America
- All state welfare programs must involve thumbprints so no double and triple dipping
- Plus a Federal database of such thumbprints so people can't get welfare in two or three states
- Citizenship verified for all welfare programs
- Eliminate anchor babies via Federal legislation, not a Constitutional amendment which would take too long
- Legal status must be verified to attend all US schools. This would be a Federal law and the Feds would fund this
Finally -
A limited agricultural guest worker program with serious enforcement provisions. An agricultural guest worker program for 1-2 million foreigners and not just Mexicans. Asians and other Latin Americans could try to qualify. This program would be just for agricultural, meat packing and food industry workers. No wives and family allowed. You work then you go home and this is enforced
These nasty agricultural jobs do need foreign workers and will help keep food production in the United States. We don't want to put American farmers out of business to where we end up importing Mexican and other foreign produce, fruits, vegetables and meat
Israel's multiple fence, border fence system. This fence is designed to succeed!! Sensors, surveillance cameras, lots of barbed wire, ditches to stop vehicles from ramming through it, paved access roads for fast armed response etc etc.
Israel has proven that border fences can be effective. The open borders lobby should stop lying about them

The Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service have it within their power to inform employers when they have hired undocumented workers, but are kept from doing soWho put these policies in place? Who is responsible? What specific directives need to be rescinded?
Names. We want names!

President Bush claims his proposed "guest worker" program is no amnesty.
Giving legal status to illegal aliens through employment authorization and a renewable non deportation pass is most certainly an amnesty rewarding law breakers.

Cut off their benefits and they'll slowly deport themselves. Another thing lost in all this border rhetoric is the amount of welfare fraud by these illegals and their enablers to use multiple ID's (matricula cards) to collect welfare in who knows how many different names. How else can they afford the payments on these SUV's and a carload of kids with neither parent working or if they are it's for minimal wages.
