TEHRAN, Iran -- An Iranian military transport plane with more than 90 people on board has crashed into a building in a residential area of Tehran, state-run television reported.
The official IRNA news agency reported that 10 bodies have been retrieved from the site of Tuesday's crash.
The C-130 aircraft was headed for the port city of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran when the pilot reported technical difficulties and was returning to base, according to Abdul Rahimi, a spokesman for Iran's civil aviation authority.
Journalist Shirzad Bozorgmehr told CNN there are unconfirmed reports that the aircraft was carrying military personnel and journalists.
The ISNA students' news agency reported the plane smashed into a 10-story building and burst into flames. Other Iranian media said the aircraft had hit an apartment block, Reuters reported.
"I can see flames licking out of the windows of the fourth floor of the building," said a Reuters journalist at the scene.
Shahram Alamdari, a Red Crescent official, told Reuters by telephone from the scene: "It is awful down here. I am suffocating." Alamdari then hung up the phone.

Quite a loss.
Did you look in breaking news?
I wonder who's been selling them spare parts for that Herc since 1979?
The Bad News is that 2 seats were Empty!
Pray for W and Our Amazing Troops
Iran certainly knows how to obtain publicity. These guys are good!
It was reported on Fox News that a plane crashed into a tall building in Tehran....
Maybe C130s have a self destruct mechanism? The old models the Iranians have should be to about that point by now.
Hopefully they were all high ranking
hardliners, and senior clerics.
HEY! A two-fer!
It is a shame about the civillians, though. Many of them are not muslims and are virtually captives in their own country.
Thinking about it...they probably *were*
ranking officers..J.G.s and non-coms
don't usually fly with a press contingent...
>B^)
Well, i won't feel too bad..at least
not yet, any "civilian press" travelling
with a group of Iranian ranking officers
are likely members of the Ayatollah
supporting "press".
The Iranians have been reverse engineering Bell 214 and Jet Rangers. Doesn't take much technology to build parts for C-130 engines. The Iranians F-4, F-5 and F-14s are still regularly seen out over the Gulf. Their P-3 fleet are also regular players over the Gulf on maritime patrol missions.
Looks like other run on virgins.......makes one wonder where they get them all.
Any photos of the plane?

No dancing in the streets, though. The neighbors would talk.
Iran has gone from the most modern Islamic country in the Middle East to a hell on earth...thanks in a large part to James Carter.
I often think how different the Middle East would be if Lebanon hadn't been taken over by the Syrians, The Shah had not been betrayed by Carter and the RAT Party, and Israel had not given back the Sinai!
