Why do non-religious Jews support Israel anyway? One answer is that Israel offers Jews around the world of all stripes a national homeland, i. e., a possible refuge from persecution and discrimination in other countries. History has shown that such persecution and discrimination may seriously impact the lives of all Jews in those countries. As I'm sure you know, the vast majority of early Zionists were non-religious Jews.

Those non-religious Jews picked the worst place in the world to plant a "secular Jewish state." How could they expect any Jewish state in that location to be free of religious and messianic expectations? A minimalist, secular refuge state sure doesn't need to have Jerusalem as its "eternal and undivided capital." Perhaps I should ask why secular Jews (or even non-apocalyptic ones) to insist on a Jewish state in the land of the ancient and prophesied future Theocracy?

There's lots of room in Antarctica, and nobody to fight with, not to mention no nasty "extremist" messianic expectations.
