Illegal Immigration: When a one-issue activist from a fringe party holds the Republican candidate to under 45% in GOP territory, it's time to take notice.
If you're looking for the Orange County of pop culture and political lore, you'll find it in California's 48th Congressional District. This is the quintessential O.C., from storied beaches to rock-ribbed Republicanism. Outside the college enclave of U.C. Irvine, this is turf where the GOP reigns and its candidates usually win in a walk.

Presidente Bush, please take heed.
When fringe candidates do a better job addressing mainstream concerns than establishment politicians do, the latter can expect trouble. This week they got their warning shot.
Let's hope they get the message--and act on it.
Good description of the situation in California. Unfortunately, money seems to be the factor that makes a successful candidacy. Campbell had plenty (from the GOP), Gilchrist had much less, yet the fact that he got 25% of the final vote is encouraging to those of us who supported him.
"fringe party"
They only want to enforce the border and protect the nation. Thats nice. Keep calling them abnormal. That will get you support.
Ross Perot's votes in 1992 paved the way for BOTH parties to get serious about balancing the budget.
Maybe Gilchrist, together with other similar votes, will prompt similar results?
However a Tancredo 3rd party effort in 2008 would walk a democrat into the White House for sure.
New York-Washington axis translates to blue states, and grass-roots translates to red states. This is still going to be an issue.
You must be kidding! Perot caused a "balanced budget"! You are correct in that a vote for Gilchrist will mean another Bill Clinton as President.
I think it's a good description of the situation all over America now.
Unfortunately, money seems to be the factor that makes a successful candidacy. Campbell had plenty (from the GOP), Gilchrist had much less, yet the fact that he got 25% of the final vote is encouraging to those of us who supported him.
Considering where he has come from as a virtually unknown fighting against an incumbent who got money and other help from the GOP, he did remarkably well. I'm very pleased. He sent that warning shot to the GOP in DC and across the nation! We've had enough and we want action from our government. I still fear the worst. I don't trust many of them in DC any more.
And Tancredo understands that. So he wants the Republican party to save itself by doing the right thing, and he has said so over and over. But he - and we - will not walk away from the issue over party unity. It's too important for that!
So the Official Malfeasance and Viva Mexico wing of the Plutocrat Party needs to get a clue. NOW.
Bears repeating!
The Republican Party could not only save itself but pick up a significant part of the blue collar labor vote from the Democrats by doing the right thing.
But unfortunately, most of the Republican Party, and particularly the Senate Republicans are owned lock, stock and barrel by the Chamber of Commerce. They will probably find it necessary to re-experience minority party status before they get the message.
Actually he spent $500,000 and got tons of free advertising from the John & Ken show, so he didn't run a paupers campaign and still came up short in 3rd place behind the democrat unknown.
You sound like hillary or nancy pelosi with your vitriol towards that evil Chamber Of Commerce.
They appear to be on a path to do just that.
Oh Well. Just have to ride it out. Eventually the vote will bring in those who will solve the problem. It's happening now as this article makes clear, but it'll take time.
We will have Randy Graf in Arizona, possibly Throckmorton in Utah to replace Chris Cannon, and Don Goldwater as the governor of Arizona to get rid of the odious Janet Napolitano. Slowly, but surely, the opportunists and get-alongs-to-go-alongs will be ushered out.
Question is, will they be in office as the minority or majority party when they get there?
I am a small business owner and an investor; I am very pro-business. But I understand that the United States is more than just a market and that there is more to good governance then just satisfying the desire of that market for cheap labor. The Chamber of Commerce has lost site of those truths and is pushing policies that might be good for some businesses but are bad for most Americans. I have no problem being critical of them and I very much resent their undue influence in the Senate (just as I resent the undue influence of labor unions).
That's your opinion and you are entitled to it, but I disagree with you that the Chamber of Commerce is the evil organization that you make it out to be.
Has illegal immigration turned Cali into a businessmen's utopia? Or has the land grab displaced those predisposed to republicanism and free markets with those disposed to social democracy? (far too many conservatives of the NYC/Beltway axis of venality choose the latter for their model of "global hedgemony")
Just out of curiosity, what do you think of the Bush plan. I know on other threads you have said that you support Kyl/Cornyn, which I also do in throery. Does the Bush plan, in your opinion, mirror the Kyl/Cornyn plan, or the McKennedy amnesty bill?
