Hmmm. The WABC radio presentation just said that the North Vietnamese scored a military victory in Tet '68. And that was why LBJ decided not to run for reelection. Eugene McCarthy was said to be the beneficiary if not the secondary cause for that abdication (Tet being the prime).
The Viet Cong & North Vietnam won in the hearts (and souls, it is hoped) of news presenters, but even NVN generals & Ho himself admitted they lost except in American news circles - jerks. Thence in hearts/minds of the American herd of citizenry.

McCarthy was no threat to LBJ. There were so many antiwar 'rats running around that "Clean Gene" was just an asterisk politically. Consider: LBJ won the NH primary in 1968 AFTER he had already announced he would not run. Beat McCarthy even though he was no longer a candidate.
