McCarthy did have a wry sense of humor. I remember reading this quote about him.

Confronted with the choice of three Democratic presidential nominees in 1960, McCarthy quipped, "I'm twice as intelligent as Symington, twice as liberal as Humphrey, and twice as Catholic as Kennedy."
