Met him about a year ago in a D.C. restaurant. He was a pleasant old guy, but said rude things about Ronald Reagan. I did not respond to that, but was not surprised that the old man was still bitter to be overshadowed by the "Big Boss Man".I'm not surprised, I remember reading an article (a sort of where are they now type piece) about him a few years ago.
The impression I got was that he had become very bitter with pretty much everybody and disallusioned.
The way it was implied was that he had pretty much turned on everyone, democrats, republicans, independents, friends, family, etc.
The mystery was what happened that made him so bitter against everyone.

A campaign sign of the era: RFK has the profile. McCarthy has the courage.

I hope that he enjoys burning in Hell for the crimes he committed against his country.

Shook his hand in a reception line at the Keene, NH American Legion post in late January 1968. I was the same hard-rightist then as I am now but my GF in college at the time was a JulietAlfaPapa from W. Roxbury who despised LBJ as much as me and thought that "Gene" would bring the Dem party back to its "progressive roots."

I am so glad to see that the Freepers are once again proving themselves far more civil than the DUmbasses. Just a few days ago, when Lady Thacher was in the hospital, they had threads of how they wished 'the old bag would die' and wishing pain and suffering.
This gentleman was the antithesis of Conservatism, yet we still send our prayers to his family and praise his life, even in disagreement.
I agree with the posts here, I believe he was very sincere in his beliefs and what he said- something one cannot say about most of the left's politicians today. Sincerely wrong, but sincere. He dedicated his life to public service. Prayers to his family.

You said it! When word came that Laura Ingraham had breast cancer, I posted it on radio-info.com's News/Talk board
and the moonbats went into serves-her-right, hope-she-
dies mode! The moderator jumped in and chastised the
insensitive louts and urged them to show a little
compassion (something liberals are always boasting about.
Show compassion for others ...unless they're conservative;
be proud of black Americans' accomplishments... unless
they, like C. Rice, happen to be conservative... etc.
To: mnehrling
Agreed. Even though I disagreed with their politics, all three Minnesota Senators who made it into the national spotlight-- HHH, Eugene McCarthy and Walter Mondale, were civil, likeable and had a sense of humor and wit.
I'm truly sorry to see McCarthy died in a care center apparently forgotten by family and friends. Of the three only Mondale is left now and when he goes the ranks of prominent Democrats in the mold of civility and class will grow even thinner. R.I.P. Gene.

Instead of giving people a chance to earn a living, McCarthy said, the Great Society "became affirmative action and more welfare. It was an admission the New Deal had failed or fallen."
How profound!
To: mnehrling
I have nothing positive to say about the man's politics. I believe he was badly mistaken and did much damage during his political career. Nonetheless, I will join my fellow Freepers in commending his soul.
We are not Democratic louts. We should be civil.

Those on this thread who reflexively condemn the man should read the article:
"In 1980 he endorsed Republican Ronald Reagan with the argument that anyone was better than incumbent Jimmy Carter, a Democrat."
He was one of a kind, that much is certain. God bless him.

And thanks to the Man Above he didn't. But he was part of the 'peace at any price' crowd. I also recall he made negative statements about USAF personnel held as POWs.
But he did do his assigned missions flying a B-24 in combat.
