while cultural and linguistic diversity are to be cherished, every Australian must subscribe to a single standard of human rights.Linguistic diversity is NOT to be cherished. Accepted as fact and accommodated sometimes when necessary, but there is no way it can be preferable. Without a common language, there really cannot be a USA in any sense other than a place.

Before the British occupied India the custom of "sutee" was practiced; widows were expected to throw themselves on the funeral pyres of their husbands. The British stopped the practice. A Hindu protested:
"It is our custom to practice sutee!"
To which a British administrator responded:
"And it is our custom to hang those who engage in such practices."
