Shots rang out on busy Toronto streets crowded with Boxing Day shoppers today, killing one person and wounding seven others.
The first shots were apparently fired around 5:30 p.m. from a vehicle driving north on Yonge St. near Gerrard St., severely wounding one woman in the head.
Police received calls within minutes about seven other shooting victims including one in the Delta Chelsea hotel, one at a Pizza Pizza, two in the doorway of the nearby Foot Locker and one at a Red Lobster restaurant.
Police have two men in custody in connection with the shootings. They were apprehended at the Castle Frank subway station.
One of the victims shot at the Foot Locker has apparently died. Two of the others shot are reported to be in critical condition at St. Michaels hospital. One victim reportedly walked into Mt. Sinai hospital.
The wounded include a 16-year-old boy.
Wendy Perry and her husband were staying at the Delta Chelsea hotel when the violence erupted.
They could see the area streets from the balcony of their hotel room.
She said she heard a number of shots go off and the sound of a car squealing away.
"We saw people racing out of stores," she said. "I thought it was fireworks."
BREAKING ...
Throw 'em in jail for a few weeks. That'll sure teach them.
Oh wait. Someone died. Make that a few months.
/sarcasm
No law abiding person has EVER committed a gun crime...
Set them free at once !!! Their identities were ascertained by means of warrantless wiretaps.
Oh yeah, and Paul Martin's handgun ban is going to magically solve this...
And I believe in the tooth fairy and pixie dust too.
ROFLMAO
I probably don't need to remind people here--but if just one armed citizen was nearby, he might have been able to take out the shooters, and save a lot of people some serious grief.
It appears they were just shooting down people for the hell of it. They deserve to follow Tookie, but its Canada so they wont. This is simply insane.
Every time I go across the border, the Canadian immigrations officer asks, "What are you bringing with you for your personal protection?"
I always politely answer that I am not bringing any firearms, although over the years I have thought up a number of smartass comments that would get my butt sent back across the border, if not arrested.
Such as, "Are the Mounties on strike?" "Don't Canadian cops protect U.S. tourists any more?" and "My guns are in my other car, an M1A1 tank."
Well, its finally happened. My kids went shopping in suburban Detroit today. I guess they were safer there than downtown TO.
I don't know if it's safer, but it can't be any worse.
Whew - glad that gun ban is working out so well.
The socialist scum who rule civil liberties deficient Canada have wasted a billion (plus) bucks harassing honest gun owners in the early phases of long term gun grabbing plans.
The criminals of course always have guns.
GMMAC , I refuse to believe this is happening in Canada's Liberal Paradise./sarc
At one point years ago I was doing a project in Detroit, and we would drive across to Windsor Canada frequently for the night life. To go back and forth, a US drivers license was sufficient.
Then I had to go to Ottawa for a different project. I didn't bring my passport. The mountie says he needs to see a different form of government-issued picture ID
So I hand him my Pennsylvania concealed carry ID. The look on his face was priceless.
He asks "Do you have a firearm with you?". I say "no sir". What can he do? He waves me on
