This is just a high tech version of the beggars who stand at busy intersections with signs and cups. It must work; otherwise there wouldn't be so many of them.
Somehow I never got interested in beggardom (is that a word?) as a career option.

its actually pretty enterprising my goal in life is to make as much money as possible with as little work as neccesary if you think its stupid dont send them money but they are not doing anything wrong

You'd be AMAZAED at how much can be made this way. Not necessarily the "last gaspers", but professional beggars who make a science of it.

I watched some of these who set up regularly near my home. Although most people just drive by someone would give them a dollar or two every few minutes. I calculated they probably make $20 to $30 an hour. Not bad and probably better than they could make at a real job.
