This is an absolutely fascinating story. What I will never understand is why the Germans did not allow the Israelis to help. (Even for no other reason than to share the blame if something would go wrong. Yes, I am completely cynical where Germany is concerned.) After our own swat and security teams, I would want to see Israel's coming to my rescue. They are among the best in the world.

It is worse than that. After Israeli Mossad found the terrorists, and informed the German, Italian, French governments, they refused to do anything, and even warned the terrorists that Mossad had located them.
Only then, faced with active cooperation of European Governments with evil, did Golda Meir direct the activation of the Mossad operation.

The Germans did learn from this experience though and formed GSG-9 after Munich, their own anti-terrorist group, trained by the British SAS.
