A United Airlines flight from Eugene to Denver was diverted to Salt Lake City on Wednesday after a University of Oregon graduate student with no criminal record got into a physical fight with another passenger and lunged toward the cockpit, an FBI spokesman said.
Bogdana Atanasova Georgieva, 35, a resident of Bulgaria now living in Eugene, tried to run from airport police after Flight 6664 landed at the Salt Lake City airport.
"She made a reference about a bomb being on the plane," Special Agent Patrick Kiernan said from the FBI's Salt Lake City bureau.
Airport police searched the plane and found no bomb, Kiernan said.
Passengers reboarded and continued on to Denver, United spokeswoman Jean Medina said. The flight arrived about 11:30 a.m., two hours later than scheduled.
Georgieva was taken to the University of Utah Hospital for a mental evaluation.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Salt Lake City has charged her with a felony count of interfering with a flight crew.
According to charging documents obtained by The Associated Press, Georgieva seemed agitated early in the flight, which left Eugene at 6:13 a.m. When she took a bottle of water from the passenger sitting next to her, the passenger asked flight attendants to be moved to another seat, court papers said. When the female passenger got up to move, Georgieva allegedly threw the woman into the aisle, the charging papers said.
She then began yelling that "she had a baby named Jesus, she was impregnated by her uncle and President Bush was behind it all," charging papers said. She then attempted to take off her shirt and started to throw items at other passengers, the documents said.
The pilot diverted the plane to Salt Lake City International Airport. During the landing, she allegedly ran toward the cockpit and was stopped by flight attendants, with whom she got into another scuffle. She eventually was subdued by other passengers, the documents said.
As she was departing the plane, she allegedly tried to flee and made the bomb threat, Kiernan said.
Kiernan said it appeared Georgieva was traveling alone.
According to her University of Oregon Web site, Georgieva is studying toward a master's degree in physics and expects to be finished this spring. She already holds a doctorate in physics from Oregon State University, a master's degree in mathematics from the UO and a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Lewis and Clark College.
She is also an assistant professor of mathematics at Pacific University in Forest Grove, according to that school's Web site.
She teaches courses including algebra, calculus, partial differential equations, numerical analysis and calculus of variations. She also has served as an adviser for undergraduate research projects.
In 2002, she presented a paper at the Second International Conference on Teaching of Mathematics at the Undergraduate Level in Crete, Greece. Also that year, she received the Junior Faculty Award from Pacific University.
According to her Web site, her research focuses on calculus of variations and symmetry methods for differential equations.
She speaks both Bulgarian and Russian.
Title should say Woman not Women.
"She made a reference about a bomb being on the plane,"
Mistake #2.!
Well, there's grounds for impeachment if I've ever heard them!
Well, she certainly was after the incident. Would you admit to being her travel companion? :=)
Ok, I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.
I clicked on the thread title thinking of "UO" stood for University of Oklahoma I was gonna have to come up there to Norman and try to figure things out myself. Luckily, this was a different "UO" or "OU".
Sure it wasn't one of the hosts at Err America?
And her underwear was full of peanuts shells.....because she's f#ing nuts!
She is a professor, she could be a nutcase. Or someone else could have been monitoring the event, observing the response from flight attendants and air marshal, if there was one.
PICS. NOW.
Paranoid schizophrenic?
Gawd, we let anyone in the country.
I wonder what her DU screen name is?
Think carefully before you request pics. The name helen thomas sounds innocent enough.
I'll bet a lot of you will think she's a real loony, but not by Eugene standards. She's a flaming liberal part time professor, in Eugene and Portland she's a mainstream liberal academic. Scary huh. LOL
If she had done this before 2000, she wouldn't have needed to get her uncle involved.
My thoughts as well.
