OTTAWA, January 13, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) A study conducted for the Canadian federal Justice Department has recommended that Canada ditch its laws banning polygamy.
Criminalization does not address the harms associated with valid foreign polygamous marriages and plural unions, in particular the harms to women, the report states, as reported by The Canadian Press, who obtained the research through the Access to Information Act. The report therefore recommends that this provision be repealed.
The Liberals commissioned the polygamy study last winter, driven by the fear that opening the door to same-sex marriage would also pave the way for legalization of polygamy. The study was paid for by the Justice Department and by Status of Women Canada, and conducted by three law professors from Queens University in Kingston.
Lead author of the study, Martha Bailey, argued that keeping polygamy illegal served no useful purpose. Why criminalize the behaviour? Bailey said. We don't criminalize adultery. In light of the fact that we have a fairly permissive society, why are we singling out that particular form of behaviour for criminalization?
Bailey emphasized that other problems associated with polygamy should be dealt with. If there are problems such as child abuse, or spousal abuse, there are other criminal provisions or other laws dealing with those problems that certainly should be enforced, she said.
Leading up to the legalization of same-sex marriage by the ruling Liberal government last year, Conservative leader Stephen Harper warned that it could lead to legalization of polygamy. I believe we have to recognize the traditional definition of marriage in law, otherwise we will continue to be presented with demands that just get more and more radical, he said. I don't believe there's any support in the country for the recognition of polygamy in law.

Simple solution, leave marriage the same as it has always been: ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN (no livestock, no same sex spouses, no multiple spouses, no children).
Any "union" which deviates from this is sinful, unnatural and deplorable.
Moral Absolute - Homosexual Agenda Ping.
Stop being so close minded, wagglebee. We are much more evolved and marriage is an extremely complicated issue. Of course, I don't expect people like you to know that.
:) HA!
This has always been the progression.
The politicians just wnat to spend more time with their mistresses IMO.
The great Utah exodus will begin
Shouldn't you be at yoga class or singing Kumbaya or whatever it is you Left coaster do?
Better yet, take away the government's power to define marriage and leave it to the people to recognize what they will.
I don't see a problem with polygmy, as long as taxpayers aren't forced to support it.
What laws? We don't need no stinkin laws! We need love freestyle!
(Made in Canukistan)
As a matter of fact, we're having a midnight vigil, standing in a circle and singing Kumbaya in hopes that the Senate will filibuster Alito. We're afraid that women will go back to dirty clothes hangers and back alley abortions.
Above that, we're also afraid that he'll look the other way while President Bush taps phones and tortures you right in the comfort of your own home. It's practically anarchy now.
:) HA!
One wife is enough for me!
Seriously though, I do believe it is true that legalizing and legitimatizing same sex marriage will lead to places we don't even forsee. If same sex marriage is codified into law, why can't a brother and sister get married? A woman and her cat?
You mean a woman and her cats !
I don't think any of this is really about establishing a "right" for any of these deviants to marry each other.
In the 60's and 70's the left tried to convince society that marriage was no longer necessary for anybody, but they failed. Now they are trying to say that marriage can be whatever anybody wants it to be.
Their objective is to totally destroy the Judeo-Christian tradition of marriage. They are trying to do this my perverting the institution of marriage to the point that it no longer has any true meaning to anybody.
Polygamy is fine as long as the rest of the wives are all camels... this will be very favorable for the muzzies who for sure are the ones who influence this stupid idea...
Sooo, if you just happened to have wives in more than one town it would be legal and you could just keep it secret. I think Jessie Jackson may have something to do with this.
Makes one wonder if He will hand us over eventually to the Mullahs, in one form or another, the way He did Iran. Some say it can't happen here..but if pedophilia, homosexuality, bestiality endure...and sliver their way into our laws..
So this is next.
Oh goodie, more parking spaces for me!
This is to accommodate the introduction of Shariah law into Canadian family disputes.
Polygamy
Polyamorous
No age restrictions
Beastialiy marriages.
Giving special rights to homosexuals meant that one could not discrimminate against other minorities also.
The flood gates are open and tax payers are on the hook for any "union" that one can think of.
