U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy — who ripped Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito for ties to a group that discriminates against women — says he’s going to quit a club notorious for discriminating against women “as fast as I can.”
Kennedy was outed by conservatives late last week as a current member of The Owl Club, a social club for Harvard alumni that bans women from membership.
In an interview with WHDH Channel 7’s Andy Hiller that aired last night, Kennedy said, “I joined when I . . . 52 years ago, I was a member of the Owl Club, which was basically a fraternal organization.”
Asked by Hiller whether he is still a member, Kennedy said, “I’m not a member; I continue to pay about $100.”
He then said of being a member in a club that discriminates against women, “I shouldn’t be and I’m going to get out of it as fast as I can.”
The Harvard Crimson reports that, in 1984, the university severed ties with clubs like the Owl, citing a federal law championed by Kennedy.
Meanwhile, Kennedy admitted to Hiller that he himself probably couldn’t pass Judiciary Committee muster.
“Probably not . . . probably not,” Kennedy said.
The committee will vote on Alito’s nomination on Jan. 24, and the full Senate will begin debate the next day. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said he looks forward to a “fair up-or-down vote.”

Hiller is the guy who tried to torpedo "W" by asking him who the leader of Pakistan was following a coup there some weeks before, and W didn't know his name. It went national in about 6 hours.
I really wish Mitt would run for senate this year instead of trying for the 08 presidential race, he doesn't have a chance!

Mitt already took a shot at Kennedy. Good race, but Kennedy beat him by 14 points. Don't know if the result would be different now, though.
They're using the term "alum" very loosely. They probably gave him an honorary degree or some such nonsense.
I'm troubled, concerned, and puzzled by Sen. Kennedy's membership in such an organization. I demand that their records be subpoened.
So, I guess no member of congress has ever been in a fraternity or sorority. I wonder if the women in Congress who belong to "women's clubs" are going to quit theirs, too, since they are discriminatory.

Persoanlly, I could care less who belonged to what club which barred whoever. Free association doesn't exist anymore.
To be fair, this is a club for undergraduates. Kennedy joined when he was a student, and probably just forgot about it. Kennedy can be criticized for a lot, but this has got to be way down the list. Also, the proposition that there is something wrong about the Owl's membership policies can be debated. Must all fraternities (that's what the Owl is, for rich Harvard boys) let in women? Must all sororities let in men?
Mitt ran against Kerry, not Kennedy. Unless he has tried once against each.
I think it's a good thing no women are anywhere near this oraca, especially when he's drunk......which seems to be 24/7
