Bisbee group protests Bush speech with 'joyful noise' (Nut Jobs on the March)

BISBEE — Not everybody was listening to President Bush’s State of the Union speech Tuesday night.

In Bisbee’s Goar Park, a group of about 50 anti-Bush protesters “made a joyful noise to drown out Bush’s lies,” according to organizer Mary Elinor “Walking Mary” Adams, 65.

The festive din poured up Brewery Gulch. Children joined in the noisy chorus. Coffee and refreshments were served.

“Today, I’m with the people who speak the truth,” Adams said as her friend Beverly “Bobo” Quick, 60, danced nearby, smacking a tambourine on hip and hand.

Local jewelry maker Joe Hogan, 70, wearing a Tibetan hat, smiled at the revelry.

“I came down to make a joyous sound,” Hogan said.

A large sign said: “Honesty rules! Fire the liar!”

Another sign, with a picture of a white dove, said: “War is not the answer.”

Steve Russell, 55, of McNeal added colorful tones to the cacophony by beating on his steel drum. Adams floated by, placing a butterfly sticker on his cheek.

“New life! New hope! The people!” Adams proclaimed to Russell.

A woman named Raven — “a Crone of the area, an elder of Bisbee” — warded off the chilly mountain night with her woolen poncho emblazed with a thunderbird design. She rattled a large round gourd grown locally.

Electric guitars and violins filled the air.

Larry Lacterman, 61, of Bisbee carried a heavy gong. How did he hit it?

“With my fist,” Lacterman said. “My knuckles actually.”

British native Valerie Stephens blew on a duck call. Clutching a copy of the U.S. Constitution in the other hand, the 59-year-old said, “I just became a citizen last year.”

Great response!

My father and his four brothers grew in Bisbee when it was a hard scrabble immigrant mining town.

All four served in WW2 with distinction.

I remember the wonderful, patriotic, Fourth of July celebrations, and the coaster races, and the hotdogs and hamburgers at the VFW hall.

I remember back about 1969 my parents used to drive us down to Atlanta at Peachtree and 10th street to see the hippies. Its good to know that they are still out there somewhere. How in the world have these people survived all this time?

It's just so touching that the Democrat Party welcomes with open arms, those who were "left on the roadside of life'.

"everyone must grow old but not everyone grows up."

Someone, it might have been Michael Medved, said this in reference to a song from "Peter Pan": "'I Won't Grow Up' is the one promise the Baby Boomers kept."

The best thing about hippy dipsticks is their age. They'll soon be unable to do anything but fling their full Depends on each other at the 'Rainbow's End' rest home.

I just don't get the new-old generation of protesters. Is J.Q. Public going see these folks on the street; see their unbathed unkempt appearance, banging on pots and pans like badly behaved children and conclude that perhaps a conventional view is wrong and we should follow in their lead instead?

And that is too bad.

Fort Huachuca is nearby and it is doing booming business right now with the war in Iraq.

Back to the Fourth of July...The Shriners had their go carts in the parade. Vets of foreign wars were honored. My father always got huge accolades as the local boy who made good and as a big war hero (two silver stars, two bronze stars).

It was a cool town for working people who busted their hump every day to put bread on the table.

The town was honest, generous, and always ready to help.

What a damn shame.

I love Bisbee, but it has a die-hard contingent of burned-out hippies. During the '00 election, there were far more Nader stickers than Gore or Bush combined. Nevertheless, the town is one of Arizona's unknown treasures.
