HUMBOLDT, Tenn. (AP) - Democratic state Senator Don McLeary of Humboldt switched parties this afternoon to the Republicans.

The change will give Republicans an edge of 18-to-15 in the Senate.

McLeary said it was a hard decision, but his heart tells him it's the right one.

McLeary is the only person to file for candidacy in the his district, which covers Madison, Gibson and Carroll counties. He said it's not titles that are important, but actions.

Wonder if he was ashamed of his party for that temper-tantrum they displayed on Tuesday night during the Presidential speech and decided he didn't want to be associated with such ___ holes...

It just might be that Byrd's speech hit home...along with the Dems like Kennedy who was totally out of control. The Senate is supposed to be the reserved part of the Congress. The Dems have failed miserably.

Well, hard decision, but why did he do it?

Was it out of political expediency, bowing to the wind, to stay in office, or was it truly a heartfelt decision, as in Zell Miller?

Tennessee Freepers?

McLeary, of Humboldt in West Tennessee, recently was the swing vote in the recent effort to oust Sen. Ophelia Ford from her seat.

This is what it has to do with-- the efforts by other dems to protect the outrageous corruption in Memphis that resulted in another Ford in office.

Watch Dems distance themselves from other Dems. They will drown for fear that others will take them down when they drown!

More from the Tennessean:

Senate Majority Leader Ron Ramsey, the leader of the push to oust Sen. Ophelia Ford, said he's not sure when he'll be able to reintroduce a resolution to void the election....Senate Republicans, arguing that ballots were cast by ineligible voters, are trying to void Ford's 13-vote victory over Republican challenger Terry Roland in a September special election to replace her brother John Ford, who resigned in May after an indictment on corruption charges.

Ramsey, R-Blountville, introduced the resolution last month, and the Senate adopted it 17-14 in the first of two required votes.

I know this may be an unpopular sentiment, but I do not believe that elected officials should change parties like that.

Don't get me wrong. I am glad to have him officially on our side, and I understand how distasteful it must be to be associated with the likes of some in the Democratic party.

That said, I just don't think it is fair to the voters. If I voted for this guy as a Republican, and he switched sides, I would be outraged. Likewise, I am sure Democrats who voted for him are outraged.

Granted, it is how you vote that is really important. One can be a member of one side or the other, and vote however you think you should even if it is at odds with your official party, as it should be.

I just think that if you are elected as an official in a particular party, it is the same as giving your word. Even if you have to hold your nose, you should stick it out.

Just my opinion, even though we are always happy to get another body. His switching doesn't make the difference like Jeffords did (committee compostion and such) but it does have meaning.

Phil Gramme (sp) of Texas agreed. He decided to change to the Republican Party, he resigned from Congress, and won reelection.

Amen. Keep an eye on this guy. If the RATS couldn't trust him...

Yeah, it is kind of tough. I have mixed feelings. All I know is, I didn't feel it was right when that suckbag from Vermont switched parties (though it was no big loss) and it doesn't feel right now.

Long story.

John Ford had to step down from his seat after getting caught on tape taking bribes for votes. He arranged for his sister to take the seat. She won a Dem primary by 30 votes and a special election by 13. The winning margin was provided by the last precinct to report. 31 voters with 30 of them for her. The local crooks certified it over the objection of the Republican.

Then the fun began. So far the Republican has found 150+ felons, dead people, and people not living in the state that voted in the election. That's 150 of 8700 votes. In the above named precinct, close to half the votes came from the deceased, people that signed affidavids saying they did not vote, or were countersigned by a poll worker who was actually out of state and I believe out of country that day.

Roland(R) went to the Senate to have the election thrown out as is his right in state law. Ophelia(D) went to a federal judge, also a family friend, to have the action in the senate stopped after the preliminary vote went against her. In that first vote, one Democrat sided with the Republicans and has been ccatching it ever since. This is the one that changed parties today.

There is more. I'm hoping it might put a dent in the criminal families that run Memphis.
