U.S. defends press in cartoons offense
THE WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | February 4, 2006 | By Nicholas Kralev

Posted on 02/04/2006 7:00:21 PM PST by FloridianBushFan

The State Department yesterday condemned as "offensive" cartoons in a Danish newspaper depicting the prophet Muhammad but defended the paper's right to publish them as a fundamental principle of democracy. It also urged Muslims, who have been staging mass protests against the cartoons and their reprinting in newspapers in Europe, to express outrage when they see anti-Christian or anti-Semitic publications. "We find them offensive," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said of the cartoons. "While we share the offense that Muslims have taken at these images, we at the same time vigorously defend the right of individuals to express points of view. "Freedom of expression is at the core of our democracy, and it is something that we have shed blood and treasure around the world to defend, and we will continue to do so," he said. Mr. McCormack's remarks at his daily press briefing were more balanced than the department's statement earlier in the day, when it appeared to be siding with the Muslims and said that "inciting religious or ethnic hatred in this manner is not acceptable." He urged Muslims to "speak out with equal vigor" when "they see similar views or images that could be perceived as anti-Semitic or anti-Catholic." "Anti-Muslim images are as unacceptable as anti-Semitic images, as anti-Christian images or any other religious belief," he said.

I know there have been other postings on this subject. This is the first one I have seen though that states the U.S. does back the press also. All of the articles posted have (that I know of) all said the U.S. was on the side of the Muslims. I just wanted to point out that the U.S. does back the freedom of the press as well.

The truth is getting out, little by little, with the help of a few freepers who have been investigating this story.

This statement I can agree with. Muslims should be equally upset with the way Jews and Christians are portrayed in their media.

Are they pulling an Oprah or is this they way they have felt the whole time? It's the first I've heard that they did the right thing.

How about the State Department saying "we're sick and tired of the kidnappings and beheading of innocents and hearing nothing but crickets chirping from the Arab Street; it's about time that you've been described in the press for the murderous, barbarous psychopaths that you are".

My post was in reference to yours. I didn't get the full story about the State Department's statement until I read the Wash Times article. Thank God for the WashTimes.

In that the DNC should know better, I'd have to agree.

It's the same story we have been hearing all day from the MSM...

Minus the "spin"-by-omission... selective and creative editing... leave out the parts they don't like...

I would like to see the State Department's official policy statement on this; not a press briefing or press account. Not looking for flames here; just the actual written policy.

They won't, and neither will the State Department, which has until now, been utterly silent about outrages such as "Piss Christ". They only mentioned the Anti-Semitic/Anti-Catholic stuff at the end, so they wouldn't get called on it. Tough noonies, I'm *still* calling them on it.

In the State Department's view, "all religions are qual, but some are 'more equal' than others"...
