CIA ousts al-Qa'eda hunter 'for lack of aggression'

The man at the head of America's efforts to hunt down terrorists has been forced to resign amid concern that he was too cautious in pursuing al-Qa'eda leaders.

Robert Grenier, the head of the CIA's counter-terrorism centre, is the latest in a series of senior officials to resign from the agency over the past year.

Intelligence officials told the Los Angeles Times that the head of the CIA's clandestine service had become increasingly frustrated by Mr Grenier's approach, which he thought too tentative.

However, they insisted that his resignation was not connected with the failure of last month's attempt to kill Ayman al-Zawahiri, the deputy leader of al-Qa'eda, in a missile strike against a remote Pakistani village.

Mr Grenier has been a key figure in America's fight against terrorism since the attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001.

He was the station chief in Islamabad at that time and played a major role in co-ordinating the subsequent campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

He was also pivotal in the countdown to the war against Iraq. In the summer of 2002 he was brought back to the CIA's headquarters and put in charge of a newly-created and euphemistically named Iraq Issues Group.

He was appointed to his new post about a year ago at a time of considerable turmoil at the CIA following the appointment of a new director, Porter Goss.

"The word on Bob was that he was a good officer but not the one for the job and not quite as aggressive as he might have been," a CIA official told the Washington Post.

Wow! Not aggressive enough?

I want the toughest person we have running that area. Someone who will sleep, eat, think catching terrorists 24 hours a day until the job is complete. Someone who will not take no for an answer. Someone who is NOT worried about hurting someone's 'feelings'.

Seems President Bush should have cleaned out the CIA long before this.

"put in charge of a newly-created and euphemistically named Iraq Issues Group."

That's a big no-no. We don't leak the code names of secret operations to the Washington Post.

Amen. As for me, I wanted W to fire pretty much everyone right after 9/11, and bring in the real spooks, instead of the ingrained Clinton PC crowd.

Only problem is Jack would kill every terrorist within 24 hours and then the CIA, NSA, and the military wouldn't have anything to do.

This is a very good move (and has been needed for some time) - The shooters in the field will be very happy - Though this has been speculated to have been coming down the pike for some time now.

Glad it is official.

Our shooters need to be turned loose more so then they currently have been in some cases of tracking down HVT's -

How is he going to find the "real spooks"?
Even if he(really we) are able to find them,(and they do exist)we are forbidden from hiring them.
They might consider risking their lives again, if former POTUS Carter and/or Clinton, is indicted and executed for treason.
Less than that, is insufficient inducement.

Finding the Al Qaeda leaders is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

The procedure to accomplishing that is to burn down the haystack then run the ash thru a sifter till ya find it.

If I am chosen as the replacement alqaeda hunter I'll employ a similar approach.

Did we get him ? No. Double th blast radius and try again .
