A Young Bush Appointee Resigns His Post at NASA
New York Times ^ | February 8, 2006 | Andrew C. Revkin

George C. Deutsch, the young presidential appointee at NASA who told public affairs workers to limit reporters' access to a top climate scientist and told a Web designer to add the word "theory" at every mention of the Big Bang, resigned yesterday, agency officials said.

Mr. Deutsch's resignation came on the same day that officials at Texas A&M University confirmed that he did not graduate from there, as his résumé on file at the agency asserted.

Another resume-padding Republican hits the dust.

You want something scary? There are probably people in both parties with access to sensitive information, that flat-out lied on their resumes.

These kinds of people should be brought up on charges - falsifying government documents, even if it's just resumes submitted for federal positions, is not something that should be blown off (although I'm sure the young man has plenty of apologists, because that's the trend of the 2000s it seems).

Please show us any evidence that the President even knew about this kid's position.

Apparently the President must personally verify the political position of everyone on his staff, right down to the clean-up staff at the White House. /sarc

Maybe you think it's okay to lie, but many of us do not.

"I didn't realize that the Big Bang had graduated from theory to scientific fact."

The Theory of Gravity, Electrical Circuit Theory and Aeronautical Theory haven't either

To begin with, I never said my attack wasn't an ad hominem. Secondly, you said Janes opinion was pure speculation which was redundant since she stated it was just an opinion. Usually noobs are a little more low-key. Which sets me to speculating.

I know what a Schedule C appointment - FYI the Google search on "schedule c federal appointment" comes up empty ; )

You don't need the quotes.

Well, I don't either.

The comments I made were directed to the person who made the post, who has a habit of making things like this seem like the end of the world as we know it - and this is not.

And, how do you know Deutsch's position was a Schedule C appointment?

The position they describe sounds like schedule C. In fact, the plumbook for 2004 lists a PAO position at NASA/Washington headquarters, as a political appointment.

And NASA Watch agrees: resigned yesterday.

Here's the classification for Schedule C: "Schedule C positions are excepted from the competitive service because they have policy-determining responsibilities or require the incumbent to serve in a confidential relationship to a key official. Most Schedule C positions are at the GS-15 level and below." http://www.opm.gov/transition/trans20r-ch5.htm You really think that applies to a 24-year-old copy editor in the NASA press office?

What qualifies discussions regarding theories of the origin of the universe as being off-limits for endorsement by public institutions?

The fact that said origins cannot and will not be known to any man or any institution.

They're free to discuss it until they're blue in the face. Official endorsements are for governments with a vested interest in convincing its citizens one way or the other.

The job description at USAJOBS states that information must be true at the time of application. I based my reply on real life experience (not only as a graduate, but also as someone who has had to review resumes and interview potential employees). I stated what I thought could have happened, I didn't state it as fact. Is stating that Mr. Deutsch was a presidential appointee opinion, spectulation, or fact? (I didn't take your reply as a personal attack.)
