Members identify Vines' successor

The Rev. Mac Brunson, a Texas preacher known for his homespun, Bible-based sermons and an ability to inspire congregations, will be nominated as pastor of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, prominent members of the downtown megachurch said Thursday night.

State Sen. Stephen Wise, state Rep. Stan Jordan and Duval County Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland told the Times-Union that Brunson has been tapped to fill the pulpit vacated by the Rev. Jerry Vines, who retired Tuesday after 23 years at the 28,000-member church.

"I know it's going to be the guy from Texas," Wise said of Brunson, who is pastor of the 10,000-member First Baptist Church in Dallas. "I got it from an e-mail."

Jordan was equally certain. >>>>>>>> Deacon Judson Whorton, leader of the eight-member pulpit committee that searched for Vines' replacement, said an announcement about a new pastor will be made at church on Sunday morning but he declined to identify the candidate. He described reports about Brunson as "rumors."

"We have not announced that," Whorton said.

Baptist ping!

I can't believe the author would really get Wise and Jordan to go on record like that!

First Baptist, Dallas has been a rough pulpit for the last few years since Dr. Criswell stepped down, although the church is in the midst of a major construction campaign.

Not much of a bio here:

"Dr. Mac Brunson has been Senior Pastor since 1999. Dr. Brunson holds degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Furman University and serves as Chancellor of Criswell College. He and his wife, Debbie, have 3 children"

I did not realize that this was the pastor of FBC Dallas.

When I saw the 10,000 membership, I could not believe that could be correct.

A combination of membership loss and clean up of the rolls has really cut down on the stated numbers at FBC Dallas.

There was a lot of turmoil when the church chose someone other than Dr. Criswell's choice for a sucessor. Then that preacher left with his secretary. The next preacher, chosen with Dr. Criswell's blessing, aparently had problems with the folks who had liked the first guy, and he didn't stay long, either. Brunson has been there long enough to get established and to get a building program going.

I had heard several weeks ago that Brunson was leaving, but didn't know any of the details.

Some of his sermons are online at FBC Dallas. I've heard him preach during Pastor's Conference and he is a good preacher imo. Haven't heard anything unBiblical at all. I don't know a lot about him myself.

There are several hits if you put him on Google.

I didn't realize that.

Dr. Criswell preached one of his last sermons at one of our conferences a few years back. Lord we need men who love you and will preach the Word boldly!

I think that it would be good to clean up our church rolls. We have 26,000 on paper. We'd have to do some construction to seat that many!

I thought that when Dr. Rogers left that we would loose a number of people, but it looks like that did not happen.

It is still hard to get used to a new pastor and his ways.

God blessed yall with another great pastor!

I heard that when Dr. Rogers retired that he washed the new pastor's feet in front of the church. What an example!

We've never had a pastor that went to movies.

I guess we'll have to get used to a few things if in fact it is Dr. Brunson that's been chosen.

Well, ours drives a pickup to work and loves goo goo clusters.

Dr. Rogers was so dignified and you could not help loving him no matter what.

I did not know that anyone went to the movies anymore. Makes me long for the good ole days.

I've never heard anything ill of him. He didn't walk into an easy situation in Dallas, but the church seems to be doing well. First Baptist isn't the icon that it used to be in Dallas - it's been bypassed by a couple of the suburban churches - but it appears to be healthy.
