Pa. man accused in terror sting (Plotted US pipeline and refinery attacks)
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 2/11/06 | Alfred Lubrano and John Shiffman

Michael Curtis Reynolds says he's a patriot. Federal authorities say he's a terrorist.

The FBI believes that the unemployed Wilkes-Barre man tried to conspire with al-Qaeda to wreck the American economy. Agents say Reynolds plotted to blow up the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, a Pennsylvania pipeline, and a New Jersey refinery.

The sensational allegations, disclosed in a federal transcript obtained by The Inquirer on Friday, reveal a convoluted plot that includes cyberspace intrigue, an elaborate FBI sting, and a clandestine money-drop on a deserted Idaho road.

The case also involves a municipal judge from Montana who has devoted the last four years to snaring would-be terrorists online.

Reynolds, 47, has not been publicly charged with terrorism. But a federal prosecutor leveled that accusation during a December court hearing, saying that Reynolds attempted to "provide material aid to al-Qaeda" and that the case "involves a federal offense of terrorism."

"He was doing it as a plan to disrupt governmental function, to change the government's actions in foreign countries, and to impact on the national debate about the war," Assistant U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus Jr. said at the hearing in Wilkes-Barre.

This guy was a moron but the story raises an interesting point.

Most refineries have security but gas pipelines are in many cases, unguarded and vunerable. Here in New Jersey, the TransAmerica pipeline runs for miles through rural areas. While most of the pipeline is buried, there are portions of it that are accessible. I would not be surprised if most other gas pipelines have the same security flaws.

The alaska pipeline is above ground....but I'd bet there's a lot of activity flying over it, all the time. (My brother is flown to the N. Slope from Anchorage to work weekly, and I'm sure there must be other flights, all the time.)

Reading the story, that appears not to be the case. He volunteered terrorist services to a freelance undercover officer of the law.

His family turned in a hand grenade, and he is charged with a violation for possession of that.

From the article, the guy sounds more flake than terrorist. His defense is that he was patriotically trying to suck the terrorists in and I have to say that it sounds possible, especially considering he was caught through another 'civilian' who patriotically sucks terrorists in.

Let's remember Richard Jewell and Steven Hatfill before we take the government's word on this.
