Cheney accidentally shoots fellow hunter

Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.

Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed him with shotgun pellets on Saturday while the two were hunting at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.

Armstrong said Whittington was mostly injured on his right side, with the pellets hitting his cheek, neck and chest, and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Whittington was in stable condition Sunday, said Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System.

Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president was with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin, Texas, and his wife at the hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Armstrong said she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shot at a covey of quail late afternoon on Saturday.

Whittington shot a bird and went to look for it in the tall grass, while Cheney and the third hunter walked to another spot and found a second covey.

Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong told the Associated Press in an interview.

"The vice president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."

The shooting was first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

She said Whittington was bleeding but not very seriously injured, and Cheney was very apologetic.

"It broke the skin," she said. "It knocked him silly. But he was fine. He was talking. His eyes were open. It didn't get in his eyes or anything like that."

She said emergency personnel traveling with Cheney tended to Whittington, holding his face and cleaning up the blood.

"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."

Armstrong said Cheney is a longtime friend who comes to the ranch to hunt about once a year. She said Whittington is a regular, too, but she thought it was the first time the two men hunted together.

"This is something that happens from time to time. You now, I've been peppered pretty well myself," said Armstrong.

She doesn't have to worry about showing up. They just remove her from the deep freeze.

Guess you never been field hunting. This was not a rifle/pistol range; nor a trap/skeet range.

Dogs are suppose to find the downed birds for this very reason. Hard to say how many dogs take one every year but it is a big number country wide.

Friend of mine found a beautiful blue tick with a tracking collar on.

Of course he did the right thing - called the number on the tag taped to the inside of the collar - that dog had run MILES from home. He happily leaped into my friend's truck-crate for the ride back home.

I've done the same thing for wandering dogs that show up at my house. Our across-the-street neighbor came walking over one evening holding onto the collar of a large, leaping Chocolate Lab. He said, "I found your dog in my yard." I said, "Well, that's about twice the size of my dog, and it's male." Oh, well. The tag on his collar had his name, a family name, and a Tampa FL address. Well, he was well-fed, had long nails, and his pads were soft and smooth, so he obviously hadn't come from Tampa! We put him in the back yard with our dog (she quickly convinced him that she was the Queen of the House, but he was fine with that, bowed and smiled and danced attendance on her) while I looked up families with that last name in a two-mile radius and called them to see if they had lost a dog. I got lucky on call number 3 (it wasn't a really common name) and drove him home. We had to have a little preliminary leash and obedience work first though . . . poor baby was not trained at all, but very willing and happy to learn.

A week later I looked out the window, and there he was sitting and smiling, barked in a friendly way when he saw me. "Got any more of those training treats? Those were good! And I like your little lady dog too." Little lady dog was like, "What! You back again? You're not living in MY house no matter how much you want to, buddy."

The idiot had a shotgun and managed to do this?
Unforgiveable lapse in gun safety and target recognition.

Throw in a fridge full of cheap beer, and that paints the average welfare recipient quite nicely!"

Dang yank,

I thought you was talkin' about me, minus the Govt. dependent, dog stealin' crooked er than a "dog's hind lag," mentality.

Now I'm getting offended -- what's wrong with cheap beer? It all tastes the same after the first 12 pack :)

I read "Where The Red Fern Grows," describes my Mother's life (not exactly, but close).

Honey, there's 'coon dogs up here worth more money than I am. You are right, the hardcore 'coon hunters are mostly now into the field trailing.

Best dog house in the world is a section of concrete sewer pipe. Doesn't rust, nice and cool in the summer, and in the winter you can close one end. It even comes in sizes for different sized dogs.

I've thought about getting into trapping/skinning. Tons of beavers & muskrat where I duck hunt. I wouldn't mind having a blanket made, be sure to piss of the AR types!

I'm heading out for some food. Ping me the good ones

I don't think you have the right Armstrong there. This lady spells her name "Katharine" and would much more likely be a commissioner than some lowly staff member.

Surprisingly (to me), when I went to find something to show you the family's background, it seems Tobin, Anne's husband, Katharine's father, just died about 3 weeks ago. Here's the obit that explains some about the family:

I also always thought that Gore would have won the Presidency in 2000 if CLinton would have stepped down and elevated Gore to President in 1999.

I wish the Republicans during the impeachment process would have pointed out that they didn't WANT to remove Clinton, for precisely that reason, but that if Clinton had committed sufficient offenses they were duty-bound to remove them whether or not they wanted to.

Maybe this is Cheney's evil plan to make the DUmmies focus on something not even the drama queen networks like CNN and Fox News could care enough about.

Yep, I've seen those too.

But those are advanced ones here in my neck of the woods. Small pickup truck campers, a blue plastic bucket, and those white, 20 gallon buckets serve as doghouses here for a lot of dog "enthusiasts."

I love how the DUmmies couldn't care less that Teddy Kennedy killed a human being, probably on purpose, but hunting animals and not eating them is the worst crime in the world. Its not like Kerry was going to eat whatever he shot at his photo-op either.
