It's my understanding that the secret service had informed local law enforcemend AND gotten Harry in an ambulance and on the way to the hospital within a half hour of the accident.

That's what really matters.

Mrs.Armstrong called the local paper the next morning.

The priorities were: provide medical help, inform LE, notify the media. All done in order of importance.

Actually, I'm not sure informing the media should even be on the list. Local hunting incidents are reported in the press only because good reporters are following the action in the police department. The fact that the police were informed almost immediately seems to me to have been an adequate first response. The fact that reporters were too incompetent to find the story on their own was given adequate response the next day with the story to the local press. The real story here is the incompetence and immaturity of the WH press corps. This is now exposed. David Gregory will forever be known as the reporter that threw a hissy fit, not as a respected journalist.

Just imagine what we would have been subjected to if the VP had informed the national press immediately.

The "breaking news" on all channels. The wild speculation. the roundtables of talking heads babbling on with no facts and all speculation. The rumor mill ( "May be more then one casualty"." Unconfirmed reports of a death". "Reliable sources inform us the VP was drunk". " We have heard of a freezer stuffed with bodies". etc etc etc.) The Descent of the Carrion Press on the Hospital and Family. The magical appearance of "experts" who would assure us that hunting accidents are a A. both very rare and suspicious, and B. So common that we should disarm the hunters for their own and the publics safety.
