INDIANAPOLIS -- A study is checking whether an injection of adult stem cells can re-grow the spongy tissue between people's shinbones and their thighbones. The injection would be for people who have surgery to remove torn parts of a meniscus. The surgery can lead to trouble in the future if arthritis sets in where the tissue is missing. Doctors hope that a stem-cell injection after such a surgery can re-grow meniscal tissue so future problems can be avoided.
In animal studies, the shot led to tissue regeneration in 11 weeks. If it works in humans, it could change the way bad knees are repaired, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported. Dr. Jack Farr, of OrthoIndy in Indianapolis, is one of five doctors in the country leading the human study. He said he is seeking study volunteers who need surgery for a torn meniscus. Some participants will receive the stem cell injection, and others will get a placebo. Months will pass before the participants know which shot they received.
Study participants need to be 18 to 60 years old. For more information, call (317) 884-5342 or visit the study's Web site.
So far there is no proof stem cells can cures ANYTHING!
Just sent this to a friend who had some surgery that really fixed nothing at all.
Oh no, that can't be true. Every one knows that Christopher Reeves would be skating in the Olympics this year if only that mean President Bush had not ended all medical research and cut the entire health care budget. If only more fetuses were aborted to give an endless supply of stem cells, we could cure spinal injuries, cancer, bad hair, smelly feet, and teen pregnancy. < /sarcasm>
i had a torn miniscus. they said i'd be 100% in 4 weeks.
i was 98% in 4 months. i've never been 100% since.

So, does this mean my fantasy football player will come back sooner if he shreds a knee?
That's what research is for. Honest research.
Oh, I'm tempted. But so far I haven't felt the need for surgery for mine. So.... hmmm.
Which means I'll be able to control my weight.
Which means Pizza three days a week!
