Oh come on. I just read your profile and you seem to be pretty smart and professional. You must have been kidding. This women survived many difficulties in this world and actually made it the way it is today so cut her a break and let her have a cigarette. I mean the last thing I am worried about is supporting someone who sacrificed and worked hard for our country when we are allowing millions of illegals to have our medical care. I would gladly support her medical issues IF she even ends up having any.

I remember the first time I watched someone on oxygen smoking a cigarette. It was about 30 years ago in a hospital section (back when even the patients could still smoke in hospitals) for the terminal cancer patients and I thought it was the craziest thing at the time. The guy would take a puff on his cigarette, wheeze a little, then take a whiff or two of oxygen, wheeze some more, then take another puff on his cigarette. I mentioned it to a couple of the nurses since I thought it had to be pretty dangerous; they just shrugged their shoulders like it wasn't a big deal, said it happens all the time.

Even young people set their houses on fire and burn themselves to a crisp by falling asleep while smoking. The health issue is the woman's own problem (although I see she's only been smoking since the age of 83). The safety issue is another thing altogether

Well, it goes both ways! Fires start all the time, and not always by a careless smoker.

Don't forget...it's likely many of the residents are on oxygen therapy. That doesn't mix well with smoking.

How is it unsafe to smoke in a room, particularly if your daughter is willing to stand next to you? Furthermore, at 93 the health issue is a moot point. She's already way in the black on life expectancy.

The oxygen safety issue is a (fire) starter. It only takes one incident (which I am sure has occured at least once in the many nursing homes) to make everyone wonder why it was ever allowed in the first place.

This is the U.K. so I don't know about the regs, but on this side of the pond I'd have to say 95% any long term facility that has been built or renovated in the last 20/25 years has mandatory sprinkler systems, so at least Granny would probably only off herself.
