I live in Coeur d'Alene and this story has touched many of us as no other has. It could of been any of us. My granddaughter and I handed and posted flyers on our vacation last summer. It is so good to hear she is getting back to a normal life.

I am all in favor of this, but I have heard one reasonable argument in opposition: Some people think that death sentences for rape/child molestation, or life without parole, might actually increase the number of victims who are murdered after the act, so as to eliminate a potential witness.

It's a chance I'm willing to take. I think the risk of repeat offenses with these perverts when they are let out of prison is of much more concern than this objection. I would also favor public hangings-- in fact for some crimes I would perhaps allow drawing and quartering, gibbeting, or being torn to pieces by wild beasts--but that is another issue.

I read in my local paper this morning, but I can't find it online. Maybe it's in the P.I.:

SENATE AGREES TO SEX PREDATOR BAN

The state Senate joins the House in approving a measure that would require a prison term of at least 25 years for many sex offenders

By David Ammons, AP

Olympia -- The state Senate, joining forces with a unanimous House, on Wednesday night demanded tough prison sentences for sex predators, including child rapists.
The Senate voted 45-1 in favor of the House's main sex-predator bill of the session The measure requires a prison term of at least 25 years for many sex offenders.
The measure passed with little debate,, in marked contrast to the partisan warfare that went on in the House last month.
Minority House Republicans berated the Democrats for not going far enough, at one point running TV and radio commercials and mass mailings against targeted Democrats. One mailer used a fake sex offender "notification" and included Democratic legislator's phone numbers.
In the end, Democrats toughened their bill, and it passed unanimously.

(snip)

Gov. Chris Gregoire is expected to sign the measure soon. It will take effect immediately upon her signature, applying to new prosecutions.

(snip)

The sentencing bill is part of a package that grew out of public outrage after Joseph Edward Duncan III was charged with three counts of murder in Idaho.

(snip)

The Washington measure would impose 25-year minimum sentences for several serious sex offenses against children younger than 15, developmentally disabled or mentally ill people, and old or frail adults.

Thanks for the ping. Not sure how you knew to ping me, but I do know at least a few people, including men, who were violated when they were young. I have every hope for Shasta, but the perps have to go down forever or they will repeat their crimes with ever increasing violence.

It is possible, but do you think these guys think consequences. Look at the other 3 children Duncan murder before this and who knows how many more. He couldn't of done those if he had been in jail or dead.

Public hanging - I'm for that! I think that would also help deter people going that route. Right now they figure they will get away with it.

Why the age of 15 on it. I'd feel the same if my 16 or 18 year old daughter was attacked by one of these guys. I did see this too on TV last night. It is a form of Jessica's Law.

You commented on another thread dealing with the Groene's so I thought you might be interested. And you are absolutely right.

"Why the age of 15 on it."

Who knows...maybe that was the age of most of the legislators when they first had sex.

Right who knows, but Rape at 15 or Rape at 16 or 18 is just as detrimental and often deadly.

Rape at any age is detrimental and often fatal.

If one of our legislators had the experience of being raped, they might have the insight to be more forceful in their creative lawmaking. Or maybe not...

It wasn't until after the assassination attempt against Reagan and the crippling of Brady that gun laws were brought to the forefront. But, as usual, legislators got it wrong when they tried to ban all guns.
