When Edward Lucas Sr. checked to see why the neighbor's German shepherd was barking at Sunday at 5:40 a.m., he had no idea that minutes later an intruder would be lying dead on his living room rug.
Lucas, 63, of the 3900 block of West Mallory Street, never wanted to have to use his .22 caliber rifle that way, but Tyrone Fyoungious Preyer, 29, would not stop breaking through the door, he said.
"I yelled 'Get out of my house,' but he kept coming," said Lucas, a retired Sears employee who resided at that house for almost eight years. "I was scared to death."
Preyer, who died at the home when Lucas fired at him more than four times, tried to break into at least three other surrounding homes, Escambia County Sheriff's Office investigators said.
Preyer's name appears 14 times in Escambia County criminal court records, with seven felonies, including: aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, burglary and grand theft auto.
Lucas will not be charged because he was defending his home, himself and his live-in girlfriend, Maxine Rasberry, 60, Sgt. Mike Ward said.
Ward said the shooting likely will fall under the "Stand Your Ground" Florida law passed in 2005, which allows people to use any force necessary in order to protect themselves when they feel threatened.

Besides, who gets the bill for clean-up and damages?...the home owner.
Anyone at the other places try to shoot him or call the cops? Good thing number four broke the chain.
They know how to party in Florida.
22 is not so bad - a larger caliber frequently discolors the wallboard.
Correct me if I am wrong, and I have been before... The stand your ground law doesn't come into play INSIDE your domicile....Right? It's for when you are OUTSIDE of your home....
Here's a good explanation of Florida's "Stand Your Ground Law."

It should be resolved within himself that he saved others from harm, he is a hero.
He is probably smiling within yet playing a victim role as the "Pro-Criminal" lawyers and family would want him sentenced to capital punishment for his killing of a criminal.
: )
that's what i thought too. you always had a right to shoot someone inside your home.
Castle Doctrine --- inside the home or business.
Stand Your Ground rule --- outside your home.
Florida does have their stuff together.
Just as I believed.
My favorite form of Gun Control.
What the heck? How would one pronounce that middle name?
It doesn't matter how you pronounce it now -- he ain't gonna answer.
Instead, they'll probably step up the self-esteem workshops at school with group-think sessions. Fourteen felony arrests by age 29 indicates Tyrone's psyche couldn't cope with the harsh world of reality.
Women and small children may need to leave the room.

Does that apply to ex-wifes?
This HERO who stopped this criminal probably saved the state of Fla. over a million dollars in tax money. Going very conservative, figure each of the criminals known crimes cost the taxpayers $5000 per crime (the cost of the cops salary to investigate, incarcerate, and prosecute. The cost of the courts to deal with him, prosecutor salary, public defender salary, judge salary, bailiff salary, recorder salary, probation report investigation etc, the victim's losses, including medical expenses etc.)
Yeah, I think the state should give this homeowner about a hundred grand (10%) of the estimated tax savings for the state. Would that get the attention of the crooks????
I bet it was a Ruger 10/22. Great gun! I sold my old one and bought a new stainless model and retrofitted a really nice black synthetic stock. Very economical to shoot as well. ;o)
A .22 isn't the heftiest thing around, but a 16-shot semi-auto can kind of make up for it...
I would beg to differ with you, an improperly placed .45 will still hurt like hell and slow an attacker down and a second shot will finish the job, as I used to tell my classes in self defense, if you shoot a person with a .22, even more than once, even with a lung shot, that person can still kill you and have time to get out of dodge before the law arrives.
However, if a .22 is all you have then certainly you should use it, but if you are smart, and the ones of you who posted extolling the virtues of the .22 don't seem to be, then you will get a larger weapon, preferably a shotgun.
