Sliwa feels slighted by co-host Kuby
The New York Daily News ^ | March 6, 2006 | Thomas Zambito & Adam Lisberg

Red-capped crusader Curtis Sliwa and longhaired lawyer Ron Kuby sit across the microphone from each other for five hours a day on their WABC-AM radio show and almost never see eye to eye. Still, with Kuby preparing to testify today for the defense of John A. (Junior) Gotti - accused of plotting a 1992 hit on Sliwa - the Guardian Angels founder said it feels almost like a betrayal.

"It will be the equivalent of having your priest or rabbi, your lawyer or your wife, testifying against you," Sliwa told the Daily News yesterday, before silencing himself toobey the court-imposed gag order in the case.

Sliwa and Kuby plan to talk about the case this morning on their show - the only place where Sliwa can legally do so - until Kuby ducks out early to testify.

As The News revealed Saturday, Kuby will take the stand and likely be questioned about how he has represented mobsters in the past.

The two radio talkers don't socialize outside the studio, but spend five hours a day with each other - developing an odd but intense bond, said their producer, Frank Morano.

"They spend more time talking with each other than most couples do," he said. "This certainly opens the door to a potentially volatile line of discussion."

An eight-week trial on the racketeering charges led to a hung jury for Gotti last year.

But federal prosecutors hope a shorter and more streamlined case will put the Dapper Don's son in prison for up to 30 years.

Gotti, 42, is accused of targeting Sliwa to silence the host's on-air rants against the mobster's father.

But the mob scion's lawyer, Charles Carnesi, said the case is built on the testimony of mob killers who made up lies to avoid life in prison - and knew that offering to put a Gotti away would win them the best deal.

I think Sliwa is just playing hurt for ratings.

Kuby (whose Mommy was a commie) had little choice. Testify or go to jail.

If the jury believes that Gotti left the crime business by a certain date, then the statute of limitations will make it impossible for the jury to convict Gotti of having Curtis beaten and shot to within an inch of his life.

Kuby will testify that Gotti told him he was out of the crime business meaning Gotti can be acquitted even tho guilty.

Looks like a ratings ploy more than anything else. Only in New York would this be allowed to happen.

If that's what Gotti told Kuby, and Kuby's under oath, that's what he should tell the jury Gotti told him.

If the jury's stupid enough to take Gotti's word, so be it. Kuby should refuse to answer whether or not he believed Gotti, because the dolt probably did. And he's not obligated to give his opinion on the veracity of Gotti's claim.
