Governor Must Be Persuasive, Not Picky On Infrastructure Deal (George "Slumberin" Skelton Alert)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 03/13/06 | George Skelton

That said, it seems to me that Schwarzenegger badly needs a deal and shouldn't be too picky. Take what he can get from Democrats and warmly embrace it as his own. Pull out a two-by-four and beat Republicans into submission.

Republican lawmakers need a rehabilitated governor to help them raise campaign money in the fall and perform little favors for the next four years. Not to mention improving flood control in their rural districts.

Privately, some gubernatorial insiders agree.

"It's been really hard to watch," one advisor says of the Republicans. "Don't they understand the part about the governor giving them something good to talk about?"

The Los Angeles Times liberal Sacramento Bureau Chief George "Slumberin" Skelton, the Wilsonegger Gang and the Democrats have read the riot act to recalcitrant Republicans: put the screws to Republicans and get the multibillion dollar infrastructure boondoggle passed. Its quite apparent who needs this deal very badly. Let's hope the GOP says NO to this orchestrated blackmail.

This part makes me angry:
Republican lawmakers need a rehabilitated governor to help them raise campaign money in the fall and perform little favors for the next four years. Not to mention improving flood control in their rural districts.

Privately, some gubernatorial insiders agree.

"It's been really hard to watch," one advisor says of the Republicans. "Don't they understand the part about the governor giving them something good to talk about?"

Who is this unnamed "advisor"? Susan Kennedy? Are Republicans supposed to accept all of the pork? Something good to talk about? Why is no one talking about the MEGA TAX INCREASE in this legislation? Why are they trying to make it sound like this is all about water storage? Where are the Republican voices to expose this legislation for what it is?--An absolute SHAM! There is nothing GOOD to talk about in this plan.

The liberal legislature, the liberal media, and the current administration simply have to be in cahoots to try to shove this FRAUD on the taxpayers. There is no other explanation! Is there?

What I find interesting is Skelton didn't bother to interview even ONE Republican on this bond deal. He talks about arm-twisting and coercion. Hey, if this is so wonderful, it should get passed on the merits. But he can't say that and neither can the Administration, the Democrats and the Wilsonegger Gang. They're desperate. Life is beautiful when you see these people in virtual panic.

Hopefully all on this forum can now recognize why the WG absolutely refused to veto a budget. The WG is as liberal as they come with a Republican gene but there are still enough conservatives in the legislature to hold off both the WG and the gang's allies, the Democrats.

The WG/Democrats may well buy off a few Republicans before this sad episode is over but I'm beginning to believe that there is a chance to derail the Austrian in November.

If the WG/DEM gang bang of Assembly Republicans fails, and the bonds bite the dust for June, many in the Republican electorate will remember the Schwarzenegger/Nunez alliance in the Assembly fight and the WG's treatment of Republican Senators the previous Friday.

Both definitely Hall of Shame moments for the WG.

Incumbents can easily raise money and are usually in very safe districts anyway. So what do they need that money for?

I don't think so. Its different from the 90s. Pete Wilson was at least a Marine who could get his party to follow him because he paid his dues. Arnold has never done that and is finding it difficult to rally support since GOP state legislators may be forgiven for wondering why they should stick their neck out for a Governor who might not be around come next January.
